Hi Folks, My girlfriend and I are to have a baby this year. She is Thai I am a British Citizen. As we are not married will there be an issue in having the baby become a British citizen?

Thanks David

Yes, as you are not married you will have to recognize the baby as your. When the baby is born, go to the amphur to register the birth yourself. By registering the baby as yours yourself you state before the law that the baby is yours and you are the father before the law. Do NOT let anyone else register the baby! Not even the hospital!

We had a girl at the Phuket Bangkok hospital they registered the birth with my name as the father on the thai certificate at Thalang,

no problem as to not being married, when she was nearly two we went up to the British embassy in BKK & registered her for a British birth certificate & passport, all very straight forward all the info on the British embassey web site.

For children born on or after 1 July 2006, it is no longer a requirement for the parents of the child to be legally married in order for the child to be British. Just ensure that you are named on the birth certificate as the father. This means that your child will automatically be British.

However, to avoid possible future complications it is a good idea to register the birth at the British embassy. You can apply for a British passport for the child at the same time.
