Relocating To Bangkok - Where To Buy Household Items?

Featured Replies

Hi. My husband and I will be relocating to Bangkok at the end of this month. We have started apartment hunting already.

Would appreciate your assistance in advising where can I go to buy household items? Not expensive - similar to Ikea items would be fine.

We are starting our house from scratch so there is a lot to buy. What do you think of Chatuchak's home section? Cheap? Quality?

Thank you

If you are looking for Ikea type stuff, you should find most of what you need at Index. They have many stores around Bangkok. I heard a while ago that Ikea were opening in Bangkok, but I'm not sure when that will be.

Good luck with your move.

Hi Jaiyenyen

Thanks for your advice. Does Index has a website? Cheap?

What about the home section at Chatuchak? Quality stuffs?

I heard about Ikea opening in Bangkok too but after googling more, it said that they are just considering but not opening as yet. Sigh...

A good place to look would be the HomePro located on the corner of Ploenchit Road and Wireless road oppisite the British Embassy. Similar to Ikea but not as good. Also lots available at Central Dept Store, Chidlom branch, a little further down Ploenchit road from HomePro. Robinson's Dept Store, located on Sukhumvit Road, Soi 19 is a bit cheaper then Central and a good selection of household stuff. Chatuchak is ok but not much quality stuff. Definetly worth a trip for odds and ends. Good luck on your move.

SB furniture is good, above Ikea quality but unless you are in Thai for 5+ years - too expensive.

Many things both SB and Index have in their catalogues may not be available. I know that, had to furnish my new 2BR condo and ended up purchasing whatever they had available (or available soon).

most appartments come furnished and additional furniture can be rented out for a small charge.

if you are not relocating for good or for a very long time, there is no point of buying everything - on departure you will have to leave it for a fration of the original price to the landlord or just leave behing and count losses.

so, first find an accommodation and than you will know what extra you need. Also you will know your geografical location and try find something locally, on your own street and neighbourhood, rather than driving an hour or two each way, to save a fed hundred baht.
