I am living in Khon Kaen and looking for a used car. I'm looking for a late model (2006, 2007, 2008) Yaris, Jazz, or Vios. I want mileage under 70,000 and cost under 500,000. I want maintenance records available. I will pay cash for the car.

I am wondering if, in your opinion, I might be better off coming to Bangkok and looking at dealers there than up-country (Isaan). If so, any recommendations on dealers that would have these cars and would be "reputable". I'd rather not just come to town and look for dealers for a week.

I've looked in Udorn and will look in Khon Kaen. I'm just thinking that supply might be better in Bangkok.

Thanks.

Tony

Bangkok would certainly have a better selection. That said, I wouldn't buy a Bangkok car. You would have no idea of how many hours it has been sitting in traffic idling. Better to buy a car that has been used upcountry and has mostly highway kilometers on it.

Good point, Gary. I hadn't thought of that but it certainly makes sense.

Used Jazzes an Vioses you can find anywhere, almost for the same price as new. It isn't worth to pay foer a used one 480'k if you get for 550'k a new one, for example.

For the new basic models, you can find them in the under 600K range. For the higher end models, they are pushing 700. For the same higher end car in 2006/2007, with relatively low mileage and some warranty time left (at least in some of the 2007s), I've seen them for around or under 500k.

Obviously entirely your choice, but for me i'd go for a low spec new one rather than a high spec used one, of which you know not the history. Buy a low spec new one and you have the peace of mind of knowing it hasn't been abused, you have a full warrantee should anything go wrong, you can order the exact colour and trim you want, and plus you can always add extras later.

Agree with that. New Vios J's go for 499,000 according to the Toyota website. May not have all the bells and whistles but it's a new car!

Try going to www.thaicar.com and find a car. Than contact www.testcar.co.th and have the dealer take the car there and have it put on the lazer to see if it has ever been in wreck.

For a late model car that is probally enough though you can even have it Dyno-ed if you want. There price is resonable and will e-mail you the report.

I did this and thankfully I did as the car i wanted had been in a wreck though the dealer swore it had not.

In My opion buying new is best But There are some good deals on used ( Mostly repos ) If you find the right one

Also check out: http://www.one2car.com/

Hi there,

i think you can find much better cars in bangkok, as people here have money and normally take better care of there cars in the north, in any case i agree with the offer of checking the car at testcar ( www.testcar.co.th ) than you will secure your selection what ever you chose.

the main problem in the north is that at this point of time you cant secure your self what you buy.

www.one2car.com is the biggest website but present car dealers which bring you again to the point how i know what i buy?

use only car dealer that let you check it, i think you can also look by the net and send the car you interest in to check it first than make the decision base on the report of testcar.

good luck !!! :o

Regardless of if BKK is a better buy, remember that your "new" vehicle will have to be re-registered (new plates) in your own Province. Prior to that it must first be inspected by "Dept. Motor Vehicles" in Bkk to check Chassis number etc. All added cost and inconvenience.

My girlfriend is leaving Thailand in the near future to come and live with me in Australia. She currently drives a Toyota Vios which is 9 or 10 months old and still under warranty. She bought it in Kohn Kaen, coincidentally, her home town. It was 560,000 baht new. Would you like to discuss this?

Whoops. a typo plus further info. New price was 660,000 on the road, from a Toyota dealer in KK. (She paid 100k deposit.) It is 10 months into a 3 year warranty. Mileage is about 23,000kms - mainly from driving back and forth between Bangkok and KK. It is a 1.5litre G model, auto, aircon. Girly seat covers!

Sorry for the advert, it just seemed serendipitous to read your post.
