Access Fees

I mean that there are lots of tourists to Thailand from places like China, India, Vietnam, Latin America -- some of which are poorer than Thailand is.

Yet they pay the 200 baht fee just the same as tourists from the US, UK, Western Europe, and Japan do.

So, the logic that the 200 baht fee is applied to foreigners because "they come from countries richer than Thailand" does not make sense.

got it - sorry, sometimes being litlle bit slow!

that's certainly a very valid point, and to top it: not every european is richer than AVERAGE thais are (not talking about toksin!), they just save money for some time, and then explore new countries, or enjoy the warmer climate :o

But one must be reasonably rich in order to go abroad for holidays, regardless of whatever country they were from, in their opinion.

There are a lot of VERY rich people now in China. Go to a casino in Macau you will see.

I agree of course not every farang is richer than the average thai.

that is rich enough already! :o

could you explain your understanding of rich?

everybody who has more than a rented cubicle to live in, his working cloth? if he can eat three times a day, is that already rich?

or where does it start?

I guess, people who can afford to live in expensive cities like singapore or hk are very rich then?

:o going to Koh Samet, arriving at the island and driving to a resort, one is stopped at the entrance of the "national park" (covering almost the whole island including all beaches, resorts etc) :

Thais pay 20bt, Farang 200bt, - the fee is to keep the island clean!

Now that I understand, since every weekend , hundreds of thai clans invade the beaches with all their home cooked meals, living all their trash where they have been sitting, whereas farang normally go to the restaurants to eat ?

Why are we paying everywhere around  5 to 10 times more than thais?

Its there country. If you take the speed boat over then usually you dont have to pay. Not always though.

Its there country. Here we go again

Get back to your own wonderful countries if you do not like it!!

I bet Thailand will really miss you................

So it's ok for you to exploit financially vunerable women, but it is wrong for you to be exploited?

Go home now.

Get back to your own perfect countries, where all is good and pure.

My understanding of "rich" is it is an adjective. And adjectives are almost always used to describe a comparison between matters and things.

Yes, being able to eat 3 times a day is certainly considered rich in a lot of places in Africa. The same it is in most places in Thailand that someone who can save up enough to fly to another side of the planet is considered rich.

I am considered poor here in HK, but I am a very rich man in my wife's village.

for me it's quite simple.

If Thai can go in for free and I have to pay, fine. It's their country, their heritage etc. (provided it stays reasonable0

If there is a price differential, I just turn around and walk off.

a similar syndrome you had many years ago in the traditional European tourist countries. It dissapeared rather quickly when they saw the busloads just go back in the bus without going in. The Germans started it, closely followed by the scandinavians.

The only way the lesson is learned, when it starts hitting the pockets. :o

or of course you could stop whinging about other peoples countries and go home

*sigh* I see the "stop whinging and go home" crowd is getting much slower these days. It took 66 posts before they started their all-to-familiar "whinge."

The all too familiar whinge is aimed at those with the all too familiar complaints about Thailand.

I agree, if you cannot hack it and think Thailand was invented for the pleasure of yourselves, then get to Don Muang as soon as possible and sod off !

Go back to your own countries that where so great you had to leave them.

Then again, you cannot get a woman 30 years younger than you in your own countries, unless you are very rich, right?

But in Thailand you can use your money to exploit financially vunerable people when you pay for sex, yet you think that type of exploitation is fine. Just as long as you are not charged 200 Baht to get into a national park.

Go Home.

Well said Sir

I guess if you're going to repeat the same over-simplified and illogical diatribe, so be it... I'll let my earlier post stand in for the second go-round:
Unfortunately, dr john (i wish he'd stop soiling the good name of John) and his "go home" gang think that EVERYONE here is as he distortedly describes.

I can only suppose it's because it's the type that HE hangs around.

I see this debate goes on and on and on!!! . A bunch of expats accusing those who don't agree with double pricing of being a pack of whingers, sex tourists ect ect,...... old news.

I really don't understand how anyone can agree with double pricing. Do u like people walking all over u ? Is it really the Thai way to take advantage of people because they are tourists and naive(an oxy-moron perhaps) ?

I know it is non-Thai nationals who are charged extra. Does this mean a Burmese , Cambodian, Loation is charged more. Bugger me dead if most of them could produce a work permit or driver's licence as proof of residency. My point, is, if you have a white face, or speak Japanese then you are seen as rich and a target. Don't get me wrong, most Thais are not like this .

Sure some of us are not ex-pats and do not pay tax . But we support our Thai families and bring and spend foreign currency into Thailand everyday.

My five cents worth .

Come off it. A good majority of us are here because it is a beautiful and cheap place to spend the rest of our days, after working hard for the most of our lives.

How many of you used to sit in a pub back in England, drinking over priced beer, eating over priced food , moaning about the weather surrounded by a bunch of morons that think a good night out is a fight and a spew. Wake up lads. Where else could you go out a get bladdered, stuffed full of food, have change from a fiver and still be able in most cases to walk home safely( unless of course you come across a couple of morons from your pub back home that try and mug you)and then wake up to a beautiful warm sunrise(or if you hit it too hard 'sunset')

Of course tourists are going to be ripped off,it happens in every country in the world, But you tell me how many countries actually tell you they are ripping you off, thus giving you a chance to decline the offer to see a beautiful old ruin or park for for peanuts. OK, most of you that write up would rather spend your hard earned pensions on a bottle of Chang( or Archa now it's a couple of baht cheaper)than see sites of wonder or beauty, but please don't knock those who'd rather witness what mere mortals can only dream about :o

spot on.

its taking advantage because of race and/or perceived wealth.

its racism and extortion. pure and simple.

the amounts involved may be small , but the immorality of it doesn't lessen.

you either allow yourself to be taken advantage of, walked over and sh4t on ,in which case you leave your pride , morals and face in the litter bin by the ticket office , or you stand up for what is right , become a man and question the procedure before walking away with your pride intact.

the thais are the first to admit what a disgusting set up it is , and i am amazed how falangs can actually agree with it.

sure they may be times when you have driven for 4 hours with a family group to visit somewhere and you cant wait outside whilst the family goes in to a park for a three hour picnic , you grumble and bitch but go along with it so as not to spoil the day for the group.

but there is no valid reason to support the policy and those that say we are rich and should pay more........well thats downright patronising to the thais but at least you give them a good laugh. why dont you voluntarily pay double for beer and food from now on ? why wait to be asked ? give that taxi driver a 200b tip if you think he is so underprivelidged , give the newsagent 50 baht for your bangkok post tomorrow , pay 2000 baht airpot tax when you go home , why just contribute at the parks. if you really thought it was about relative wealth and your motives were honourable then you would be paying more voluntarily.

but i'm afraid you are just patronising and weak and dont think about things properly , you will get taken advantage of wherever you go. and you will smile and laugh and thank them as they fleece you !!

double pricing is a crime ! its disgusting and its racist ! and those who agree with it are nothing more than misguided wimps and performing monkeys.

You both have this myopic and erroneous impression that everyone staying in Thailand is a drunken British whore-monger.

You should get out more and meet some foreigners that don't fit into your grossly inaccurate perceptions.

If you fail to see the shortcomings of this access fee schedule, perhaps it's because of the company you keep.

Who the ###### mentioned whores....I certainly didn't.........obviously you're one of the people that put the two together.ie good night out/whore. I tried to put an intellegent light on the matter. Must have gone clean over your head. I live in a part of the country where people do come to see the sights. I used to drink, but now I look after other folks needs, I don't anymore. I am also happily married (to a wonderful Thai) but I'm one of the few that DON"T need to whore around.

hi kan win,

i'd be interested to know why you pay the increased fees when you visit these places , and you must visit a lot of them judging by your photos.

is it just the national parks or would also be willing to pay more to use a tuk tuk in patong or pattaya just because of your nationality ?

I have read with great interest the pros and cons of dual pricing. Up until now I have always railed against it but reading the well reasoned arguments of the fans of it I now realise I was wrong.

What really swung it was the one "If I don't like it sod off home" actually I thought this was my home, there again I can't be right all the time.

So I propose that the people who are in favour of being ripped off contact the people who don't like getting ripped off so they can send the extra 180 baht per person to those that do visits these places.

I reckon we visit the parks and waterfalls etc. about 5 times a year with overseas visitors usually two or three at a time 5x3x180 =2,700 baht call it 3 thousand for fun, you can send it a brown envelope I won't mind at all, promise.

This way everyone will be happy, especially me.

Hi taxexile, we are in this arguement again!

Sorry if my words are going to offend you.

its racism and extortion. pure and simple.

I can accept people saying it is unfair. Or is about money. I can accept people saying it is too expensive. But to say this is racism really pisses me off. You white people know nothing about racism. That is BS!

This tuktuk bastard charged me 100baht then 20baht for that lovely thai lady.

HE IS A BLOODY RACIST!!!

<deleted>??? The whole world are racists then!
