one thing that annoys me every time i travel to bangkok is that i can't get a direct flight from dublin. i've flown with many airlines through most european capital cities, nearly every other capital city in europe has direct flight in to bangkok but still not dublin, i think the demand is there and can't understand why no airline has tried this venture

The airlines musty have done their sums and came to the other conclusion: that the demand is NOT enough to warrant a dedicated direct service-remember its'not just for 1 busy week before Xmas. In that way its no other as any other as LOn UK major city-or infact capitals of countries 2-3 times the size of IE-like f.e. Belgium, NOrway, Portugal etc. Even Poland had not 1 for a very long time-it has-excluding all the Polski working in IE-about 12 times as many people. What's so wrong with just 1 change-its daft easy to avoid that in most dreaded of airports for a change (aka as LHR=Heathrow)

only carriers based in ireland would be able to organise direct flights - all other airlines do have their own hubs and will take you first there. Some 20 airlines are flying regularly from europe to bangkok, there is too much competition for the market, especially now, in crisis

Believe me there is not enough demand. Working for Etihad we fly to Dublin every other day from Abu Dhabi and returning to Abu Dhabi with connections to Bangkok. I've worked some flights in and out of Dublin where there have been only 60 to 100 passengers on board. As another poster said, during the holidays the flights are full but at other times they are not. Even Emirates last year canceled their Dublin service because of low demand, but I believe this has been reinstated again.

I cannot imagine there ever being a direct flight from Dublin-Bangkok even in good economic times. I go through Heathrow or Schipol every time I travel. It would be ideal to have direct flights but I am not holding my breath.

In any case I fly from Cork so I am not heartbroken to avoid Dublin which is a dreadful airport. :o

You are right Dublin Airport is muck. Crowded and horrific food (McDonalds is the best outlet???????/0

China Airlines Dublin-Amsterdam-Bkk is a good option from Ireland.

if the dublin bangkok route is quiet for etihad why is this one of their more expensive routes ?

I would say they have to charge more to make up for the passenger shortfall.

I would say a lot of travellers going Dublin-Bangkok would try and get to the UK and then get something cheaper, where the choice is huge.

It's not that Dublin - Bangkok is quiet, it's Dublin - Abu Dhabi. All our flights from europe connect in AUH, thus the flights from AUH to BKK are in fact full.

Being only flight crew I do not know the specific details, but since the flight is not full (DUB - AUH - DUB) most of the time, it's running at a loss, thus we have to keep the costs high to recoup the losses.

But from what I know, our prices are basically similar to all Europe destinations out of BKK.

But whats the diff anyway betweena change in Dubai/ or Abu Dhabi or some other Gulf place/or somewhere NOt London= Like AMS, FRA, Zurich, paris/whatever/even helsinki may do )but dont know if Finn flies DUB/HEL' As IE is not even in Schengen/it hardly matters.

I would suggest that the reason the flight is expensive is lack of competition on the route. :o

I agree with that assessment as well. High costs to run the route....and lack of competition.
