Hi all,

My A/c stopped working in my 2000 Toyota Soluna. I took it to the SriRacha dealersip and they said they would have to take the A/C unit out of the car to repair. Quoted me around 50, 000 baht for the fix. What do I know? Do you think it is a bit expensive or is this custumary?

Thanks!

50,000 bahts seems ridiculous. In Chiang Mai, for my 1996 Volvo 460 I was quoted 20,000b by an a/c shop, then 6,000 for a recon unit by another shop who in fact repaired the unit for less than 3,000. All day job as lots of bits and pieces to take out.

Perhaps it needs a recharge 300 baht?

Car AC's are a sealed system, if it needs gas it has a leak, could be a bad oring, porous evaporator or condenser core, front seal on the compressor, a poor crimp on a hose.

Once the gas is gone the oil for the lubrication of the compressor doesnt circulate so running a system thats leaking gas can cause compressor damage as well as functioning poorly.

50' grand is to much. 6 grand is the normal price. I wouldn't go for the 3'k Repair Job, because it's a lot of work and itf it's brake down and leaking again, they have to do the whole job again. It's not only the job to do it. It's the hassles and the timewaste. Mostly they never put it all thogether as it was. Usually a couple plastic parts are cracked, broken or some screews and rings are over, when the job is finished. Therefore don't let it happen twice. Otherwise you'll facing, or better say hearing, ratteling dashboards when you drive over bumby roads. Fix it once but right. Yes 6' k is usually the price of the whole unit.

Hi.

Had it done (Volvo 460 as well!) at a "Somchai" type shop, can't remember how much it was but 7-8k Baht including a brand new heat exchanger (the thing that looks like a radiator). Pain in the behind to do that in a Volvo 460 because the whole dash and center console has to be removed, i saw it and even have a picture to prove it - i didn't expect THAT to ever look like a car again, however next day it did (yup, full day job for two guys).

Problem was indeed a leak in that radiator-looking device which can't be fixed/welded. And yes, i have seen the new part and the old one that was taken out, so not a con job - shop around the corner where i live and i tend to watch over repairs - am mechanic myself and been duped in garages in BKK before.

Best regards.....

50k seems a lot. The proper way to do it is to test for leaking, then do a recycle/flush/refill with a new dryer (3~4k), If that doesn't work your compressor is the most expensive part, you can have them new (15~30k) or re-built for half the price.
