The last few days I've been looking for accommodation in Koh Tao. I have read quite a bunch of good stories about this island, and even though I'm not planning to dive, I've heard the Island is still a nice place to visit. We've been looking at Koh Samui and Hoh Panghan as well, but we are afraid those places are too touristic. Anyways, my wive and I want to stay there for a month. We are however a bit dissapointed about the prices so far. Out budget is 40,000 bath for accommodation, but the lowest price we've found for an AC place is 60,000 bath.

Have I been looking at the wrong places, or is 60,000 really the minimum for an AC place on Koh Tao?

I guess to say It depends on what kind of accomodation you are looking for is obviouse but 40,000 is a hel_l of a lot of money to spend on one months accomodation. My appartment on Samui with air con, en-suite double bedroom, livingroom, balcony, Kitchen/dinner cable T.V etc is costing me 15,000 per month. I have never rented accomodation on Koh Tao and sorry Im not able to give you specific names and contact numbers but I'm sure other members here will be able to point you in right direction. In my opinion 40,000 is way more than enough. again, just depends on what you're looking for.

Koh Tao really is still a nice place to visit and I hope you have a great time!

Yeah, that's what we where thinking too when we started our search. We though 40,000 bath would be quite a lot for Thailand. We've been looking at other places than Koh Tao, and where usually able to find something nice, but not on Koh Tao (but again, I might search at the wrong places)...

We don't have too many requirements. Actually, we just have two:

- We must have internet for our work at the appartment, but at quite some places at Koh Tao there is an paid WIFI service. So even if the appartment has no WIFI, we can probably buy this paid WIFI service.

- We want AC. I'm perfectly fine with whatever temperature during daytime, but at night I like to have it a bit cooler. Especially since we stay there for a month, and I'm a bed sleeper :o

Anyways, we sure we love a bit of luxery, but in Netherlands we only have an appartment of 40 M2 either, so we're not used to a lot of space something. Kichen would be nice, but again not a requirement, I like to eat outside as well. We don't need TV either. One room would be fine, one double bed for us to sleep in. See, my requirements are easy :D

Standard for aircon apartment for a month will be about 10,000 baht. Most areas will have free Wifi.

I would be very interested also in anywhere with wi-fi, aircon and kitchen for 10,000-15,000 a month. Any concrete leads anyone?

I think if you just go to koh tao take a bungalow for the first 2 nights and renta motorbike an drive around and ask around and you wil find a bungalow for that price don't use an agency. Just ask local people but don't tell them your budget just say what you want and ask how much.

If you tell them you have 40000 to spent on a house they will offer you a 20000baht house for 40000 baht.

good luck and have a nice time :o

Sure, thats the best plan. So much easier to find what your looking for when you are actually there rather than trying to find something before you travel. Could be nice adventure having a good look around the island too. Drive carefully my friend and good luck with your search.

It's indeed best to go there and look around for bungalows, places for less than 20.000THB per month should be easily found and those places don't advertise online or have websites. Take a hotel room for the first couple of nights.

There is no difference between koh tao and koh phangan in being one more touristy then the other one, but the next few months it will be very quit on the islands because it is low low season now.

I'm living on koh phangan, so if you like to know more about koh phangan you can pm me, in dutch is possible.

have fun during your 1 month stay on one of the islands

if your not diving just visit tao for a few days its only a quick trip on a boat, go to samui but stay away from chaweng and lamai, plenty of quiet spots on southern samui and good internet connection too unlike tao which can be hit and miss. personally i like lipa noi on samui very few tourists. if you have a month you can play around on all the islands just book a few days accomodation and look around definitely do not book a place online for a month, 15k will get you a nice house 40k is throwing your money away.

Thanks for all the great suggestions here! Even though some have pointed out that Koh Tao is expensive, we will very likely make that our destination. We have decided that we wanna take a dive course (that wasn't our initial plan) and Koh Tao seems like a good place for that. We will probably go there and drive around as suggested here. Once again, thank you so much!
