tomx2 Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 Hi. Are there any over-the-counter pills at pharmacies in Bangkok (lower Suk area) that help reduce high blood pressure? Or should I just setup an appointment with a doctor at Bumrungrad hospital for a prescription. Thanks. TC.
Jingthing Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 (edited) You can get all the popular BP meds over the counter here. However, you will want to take the pill best suited to you and get the proper dosage, and monitor the results, so if this is a first time treatment with you, best to see a doctor. There are many choices so its not a one size fits all situation. Some of the pills have nasty side effects, another reason you will want to talk to a doc to come up with the best plan for you, treatment with the mildest side effects. The last time I heard simple cheap diuretics are coming back in fashion. In my case I already was on a med from the USA and it was just a matter of finding the same chemical and dosage on Thailand (different BRAND name, which is common) and buy it most anywhere. lopburi3 Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 As said they are all available. And you do not need to pay Bumrungrad prices to do it right. But you should probably be on regular blood testing when taking most of this type of medication so I would consult with a doctor from a more resalable priced hospital or clinic myself (the tests are not complex - mostly involve liver function and making sure it stays well). I take small dose of Tenormin (old time medication) and amlodipine.
maxjay Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 I take Losartan (brand name Cozaar). Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist drug used mainly to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). I buy a generic brand over the counter here in Thailand. The name of the generic brand is Loranta manufactured by Siam Bhesach. I pay 400 baht for thirty 100mg. tabs (I cut them in half, 50 mgs. per day.) Much cheaper than the brand name stuff. Less side effects for me, especially the sexual side effects common in other high blood pressure medications: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/1016896.stm In fact, some hypertension medicines may actually give a boost to a person's sex life. A study of 82 men with sexual dysfunction, published in the May 2001 issue of the American Journal of Medicine and Science, found that patients had more reliable erections and more frequent sex after treatment with the drug losartan (Cozaar). Losartan belongs to a relatively new class of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor antagonists. https://www.caremark.com/wps/portal/HEALTH_...CES?topic=bpsex 1

The combination gets very good reviews in the literature. Google it to see. Coversyl is still quite expensive -approx 500 baht for 30 days, but Amlodipine (generic name) is cheap -around 100 baht for 30 days. But agree with the others, go to a Dr. first. No real side effects except sometimes ankles and feet swell, especially when its hot. Best of luck.
moe666 Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Try some magnesium and see what happens most people are deficient and it will reduce BP with out side affects other than gastric distress if you go over your tolerance level.
phetaroi Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 DON'T BE CHEAP WHEN DEALING WITH A MALADY THAT CAN LEAD TO STROKE, HEART ATTACK, AND DEATH. GO TO A DOCTOR!

I just got a UK prescription for 3 months Amlodipine £7.20 - and the Doc said no problem if I want to take the odd Cialis tablet.

The pharmacist suggested Loranta (a.k.a., i.e., Losartan) after I told him I was looking for a lower cost substitute for Irbesartan or Valsartan (each approx 1300 and 1700 Baht, respectively, for a 28 day pack in Thailand). Losartan, Irbesaran, and Valsartan are all in the same family of Angiotenion II Receptor Antagonist drugs.

Since the 50MG Loranta (losartan) dosage level seems to be working fine, today I bought the 100MG pack of 30 pills for 390 Baht at the same pharmacy. Plan to break each 100MG pill in half to get the daily 50MG dosage. This effectively reduces daily dosage cost from 10 Baht/pill to 6.5 Baht/pill.
