I expect to retire into Thailand within the next few months. I have been married to a Thai national (female!) for 30 odd years.

I have read through much of the www.thaivisa site but I am still confused. Initially, I need a Non-Immigation A-O visa (?) which gives me one year. Is this extendable?

Can I apply for this type of visas externally (through a Thai Embassy in my current country of residence)?

The best you can do is to apply for a Non-Immigrant "O" visa from your local Thai Embassy or consulate. Ask for at least a double entry.

After you have entered Thailand you have that visa extended by yearly basis at the Immigration. An extension is quite easy, only takes a couple of hours these days!
