I recently tried having a camera serviced there, after 5 days they phoned to give me a quote triple their original quote, I asked them to email the new quote which took a further 5 days. As it didnt explain why the labour cost was tripled and there were extra unexplained costs I asked them to explain. I didnt get any reply. I picked up the camera unfixed as I can get it fixed elsewhere for the original quote. On top of that they sold my email address on and I now get spam from BKK camera shops. I cant get any reply from them about any of this. I believe its a straight out scam, most likely the people running the place arent aware of it but I can get no reply from any of the email addresses on the canon website.

I'm not sure if you have this info. Its from the Canon website in Thailand.

Hope it helps.

I need to get my Canon professionally cleaned.

Any suggestions as to where in BKK that I'm not going to run into a similar situation. Also what sort of cost should I expect?

yes, the head office was who I was trying to deal with but I cant get a reply from them, Im wondering who oversees them, I guess Japan but that part of the site is all in Japanese.

Often, when dealing with Thai companies, I have found phone communication limited and email corespondence nil.

After being told, over the phone, it would only take about an hour, I went to the main office for the G10 recall. I was told it was 1 hour for the "raw" firmware update, but the the latest recall required a change in software and would take 3 days.

At that time, I didn't want to leave my camera for 3 days. The women at the counter offered to clean my camera, free of charge, for my trouble. I thought they were great.

You might give the office a call for a quote.

Fotofile (Photo Thailand) on the 3rd floor and 5th floor and Canon service in MBK next to Fotofile (5th floor) would do it. Probably less wait than Canon service center at south Sathorn. Sensor cleaning by Canon cost me 500+ Baht but free at fotofile if you are a regular customer there.

I do all my camera cleaning myself. Mainly because location wise I have too. BKK is too far to travel for a quick wipe over. (and that's all you get anyway!)

I invested in the "Visible Dust" cleaning kit and it's been marvellous. So easy to use and safe. Well worth looking into.

I think it's all about preventative maintenance. After every "heavy" shoot, or when I've been in rainy or dusty environments, I habitually clean all my lenses, filters, contact points and blow out the camera body.

I've been using it for 12 months now and find that a weekly quick blast with the hurricane blower will usually do the job.

Using the dry swabs is a doddle and even when a heavy clean is needed with the wet solution it's easy.

It's a myth about sensor damage. The actual sensor is covered by glass - it's the glass you're cleaning and NOT the sensor itself.

A low-pass filter. Once I had my EOS 5D sensor cleaned at the service center on Sathorn. The first wipe didn't remove all the dust so I had them do it over. After the 2nd cleaning I noticed a very thin filament like thing on the sensor from the test shot which I asked them to remove. It happened to be hairline scratch on low pass filter that was caused by vigorous wiping of the sensor after my second request. They replaced what I remember to be 3,000 + Baht low pass filter free of charge which came back to me completely dust free.

Not quite so easy to delete compared to an e-mail.

Thanks for all the info, the problem is a couple of specks of dust inside the lens and not the sensor. Normally this is unnoticeable but yesterday I was taking images of the solar eclipse :) (thx The Nation for getting the month mixed up, I won't mention that I stayed up all night so not too miss it or I would make myself look even more stupid :D) and the specks caused some nasty sun spots/flares.

Normally I'm pretty good at pulling things apart and re-assembling them again, this laptop has gone through that a couple of times to clean the fan (why don't they make the cooling fan more accessible so one does doesn't have to strip it into 50 pieces to get to it?) but looking at the camera I have decided not to give it a go. I'd be lost without it :D Hopefully I can get this sorted this month ready for the eclipse next month.

AArgh - it's not a camera service/clean- it's a lens problem !

On this basis send it to Canon for sure.

p.s. I had a couple of CLA's on lenses last year at a cost of Bt800 per lens which I was happy with.

What miffs me is how it's getting in there. The camera in question is a Canon S5 IS with fixed lens. I would have thought that Canon would have the technology by now to make the lens 'dust tight'.

I've got slight dust in my very expensive Zeiss Hasselblad lenses! :)

Fact of life I'm afraid.

True, some lens might have less dust than the other, but you probably won't find any lens including weather sealed ones that are dust free. And that's not limited to Canon.
