???

To Spellbound,

Your right their requirements are a basket of crap, and it is an uphill battle.

To the gay couple,

In light of everyone they are being sent to jail for five years because of a faulty stamp. Is it all worth it?

I would think that if each of you both qualify for residency separately, no problem who your roommate is or what you do, but being considered as a married same gender couple. I don't think so. Note their Katoey's or transsexuals cannot even be considered women even after SRS, Sex Reassignment Surgery, and their names on ID remain male by law. So I do not think they are all that progressive, not even allowing gender change after surgery.

If I were you I would get married in New Hampshire, and take up residence in Key West, Florida, or San Francisco, CA, USA.

Just kidding but check around, find out the best country to settle in, unfortunately Thailand is not a nice place right now if your farang, gay or straight.

Best of Luck,

Bud

Wow...does this mean you are not coming here Bud ?

Rickman certainly not as a couple. Thai law doesn't even  recognize defacto couples. Are you old enough to qualify for retirement visa's?

A friend of mine (UK citizen) who has worked here for about 8 years in the F&B business (work permit all the time) got residency last year at the first time of applying - with no difficulty at all.  I don't think the issue of his "partner" came into it.

We know, despite the abundance of gay's and katoey's here

in thailand and in the tourists areas quite openly, it is still

a big taboe.

Just getting a visa/ work permit is becoming more and more

of a hassel but to get a residents permit, I have not yet

tried for. I can imagine if they find out your partner is gay,

that you could be classified as an 'undesirable foreigner',

who is of no use here to thai society and you would certainly

have to have an Aids -free document with you too.

As has been said, you might not even get asked about it but

my experience with Immigration offices, is that although there

are 'official' rules, no 2 places do the same thing!

To generally mention about some other things..

T.I.T. I guess but that is exactly what is wrong here.

The double standards, anti- falang campaign, is quite sad

really. Thai people want so many daily 'falang' things or way

of life, yet the authorities turn a blind eye to all this.

Thailand is quickly being 'sanitized' in so many ways, trying

to emulate Singapore (Thaksin's ideal), that the 'free' aspect

is slowly evaporating. I see it all around me, everyday.

(Foreigners are just one target.) They want the tourists here

(it is the golden goose now) they have to spend BIG money

and then go away!

But I ask myself, what will happen if so many of those bars,

cafes, restaurants were to close down, due to all the extra

rules and regulations - how many thai would loose their jobs?

Wouldn't the golden goose be affected - the tourists would

choose elsewhere to go, where places were still open.

Yes, we are 'guests' in a foreign country, true and no one likes a so called 'arrogant' falang that thinks he can do what

he likes here but at the same time, to meakly accept things

without question, I think is also wrong.

A 1 day closing action of all Farang establishments that have

thai employees, with a lot of publicity outside of Thailand, might make the authorities see that most of

the Falang here are not only legit but are providing a real

opportunity to both tourists and thai people. Joker
