Govt to organise TV pool to counter the campaign seeking a royal pardon

BANGKOK: -- The government will explain to the public via the TV pool that the signature campaign seeking a royal pardon for ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra is in contrary to the law and the prescribed procedures.

"The prime minister has instructed Justice Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga to appear in a live broadcast to warn about the wrongful campaign," PM's Office Minister Satit Wongnongtaey said on Thursday.

Just wondering why it took so long to take some "action"...

I agree with this move by PM Abhisit, and I think he's right to assign the Justice Minister (JM) to make the presentation.

However I suggest it is imperative that the JM explains the law, why the actual law is there and what drives the law / the reason for the laws, involved in this matter.

What must not happen in the broadcast is anything which even remotely:

- Looks like praising the democtarts or their coalition

- Looks like specifically hitting the red shirts.

----

There's another associated item; Jatuporn and his red shirts claim they have already got the 1million signatures and are now in the process of verifying the names. Surely this will take a long time.

But another poster mentioned yesterday or the day before that there has been no report whatever in the Bkk or upcountry newspapers / TV news etc., about any activity to get the signatures.

Interesting.

I once saw a signature gathering (not for this) up country where the headman basically just said sign here to everyone and they did. It is fairly easy to get signatures if the right person in th ecommunity is gathering them whatever it is for.

I don't agree with their campaign asking for a pardon. Its just rude.

as I have said before "pardons are given not asked for".

But I think they have the right to redress and association. Just because you have a right you don't have to use it. No one needs to pay attention to the result of the campaign, and no one needs sign it if they don't like it. Its an open ended and meaningless thing.

Turning out the government in force on the airwaves with the Justice Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga to appear in a live broadcast to warn the people about what they find to be a wrongful campaign is equaly as dumb, and shows how wrongful the governments mind control system is. The same thing they complained about with Thaksin and they do it first chance they get.

This is like a sore thumb, just forget about it for awhile and it goes away.

I hear a lot about the middle path in Thailand and have yet to see anyone try to use it.

I know, but its in the law, I am going to hear it. save the post. Lots of things in the law. Like airport closing and trashing Government House etc etc etc. At some point you need leadership rather then just some reaction by a team of the equaly bad jerks.

The Dem's have the seat of Government. Thats what they wanted. They need to stop playing the load mouth now and get some work done. Success is going to be the only proof that they were right, if thats the case.

#1 - The Abhisit administration against this Petition.....wow, that's a surprise.

#2 - The English language media not reporting on this Petition.....wow, that's a surprise.

I hate it when other posters use such cynicism, but I couldn't help myself.....sorry!

Yeah.....they are all a bunch of intellectually challenged dolts up-country. Same goes for voting. They should not be allowed to do all of that.

Not sure which topic to put this one under, but as it's slightly pardon related figure this one is best....

Chiang Mai - About 200 red shirt protesters surrounded a police station last night demanding the release of a radio broadcaster who is facing a charge of carrying a gun at the airport.

The supporters of convicted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra blocked the Phu Ping police station where Niyom Lueangcharoen of FM 92.5 was being held.

They called on the police to release Mr Niyom without any conditions.

Mr Niyom was arrested after security authorities found a gun in his car at Chiang Mai airport and taken to the police station.

The world according to red-shirts.... :)

"The world according to Red Shirts" from someone who has never attended a pro-democracy Red Shirt event, or has had any association with them, other than what the agenized has English media has deemed to report. That reporting being focussed on mimimal coverage, and when there is a reference, diminish as much as possible. I have seen a 100,000 person Red Shirt rally reported in a small inside-page report indicating about 18,000 were in attendance. Any rallies upcountry, of which there have been many and prominently attended, have never been mentioned. Most farangs would not know about those. When you become aware of another Red Shirt rally in BKK after a hiatus during which regional rallies were held, to you it seems as the Red Shirt rallies have started again, when in fact they never stopped. You would not know that. The inconsequential BKK based foreign media will report similarly.

Several other "media agenda indicators" are where they refuse to acknowledge a "democracy issue overtone". They would choke to reference the Pro-democracy red Shirts vs. the anti-democracy PAD. Given the media control, they feel with some justification they can confine the discussion to clothing colours. That is a convenient way to obfuscate the issues while they work at diminishing electoral politics. Also, have you noticed that not one report about Thaksin is without the word "fugitive". Most of the times the word is used prominently in the title as well as the body of the report. Someone, somewhere has dictated that the word "fugitive" must always be used in the same breath as the name Thaksin. This serves both to divert attention internationally from the political context of the "judicial coup" as I have seen refernced on signs and speeches at Red Shirt rallies, as well as fix a Thaksin-fugitive descriptor as inextricably linked.

The world according to red-shirts.... :)

The live broadcasts i saw definitely had more than 400, just as many non-govt controled sources says.

Also, the news miss the part about the first and only 5 minutes warning before the polices rush in to beat the protestor to the pulp.

BTW, the Minister of Justice did stated clearly that he'll have all the people signed in the petition, in jail. (strongly implying that)

Wow, this is no common 2.4 propaganda. In a few years from now, I wish to see more and more lay offs among the media houses, especially the newspaper.

If I read this correctly, collecting the signatures is 'contrary' to the law. That would mean it's against the law.

Does this gov't have something to do besides be afraid of Thaksin? The flue and Thaksin--two things they can't control.

I trust you know very well the definition of the word "fugitive".

Fugitive \<deleted>"gi*tive\, n.

1. One who flees from pursuit, danger, restraint, service, duty, etc.; a deserter; as, a fugitive from justice.

2. Something hard to be caught or detained.

Or Catch that airy fugitive called wit. --Harte.

Fugitive from justice (Law), one who, having committed a crime in one jurisdiction, flees or escapes into another to avoid punishment.

Yes, you are absolutely correct, and that is why they need to link this word so closely to Thaksin. That definition has not escaped them either. Most casual observers would give this definition credibility, especially internationally, as if they have no idea of the political context of all the Thai judicial stuff which led to the "fugitive status"., The Pro-democracy Red Shirts call a "judicial coup". One of the points I make about the consistent use of this word, is to demonstrate the media agenda. It takes more to show the existence of an agenda-driven media than just saying that there is one. This is one of the more clear indicators. I have mentioned others. If you ever get a chance, look up the April 10, 2009 UK Telegraph newspaper article on this topic. I could transcribe it here, but am too lazy.

The red shirts were outraged one of their members was arrested for possessing a gun, don't the police realize the red shirts are above the law in Chiang

Mai and Udon and are free to beat up, incite murder and indeed kill?

Ferwert, please learn to be more respectful to your 'democracy is not my goal' leader. Dr Thaksin always insisted on being called Dr Thaksin by any journalist.
