Hi!

My husband recently had knee surgery in Bangkok.

The doctor said he might need a cartilage transplant in the near future if he wishes to be able to live an active life.

He is too young to have a total knee replacement, he was told.

So does anyone have any experience about this or any idea how much it cost?

From what i have found out on the internet it is a rather new tecnique and it is not performed everywhere in the world.

Any info would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Take care now!

It's very experimental and can only be used to fill small holes in the cartilage. They extract cartilage cells from the patient, grow new cells and re-implant them in the knee joint to fill the holes. The two problems they have encountered are rejection and getting the transplanted cells to cushion like regular cartilage cells. One of my clients is a cutting edge (sorry about the pun) knee arthroscopic surgeon. I will ask him and post again as to his opinion and cost of surgery at a public hospital.

My ex-wife had the surgery in Singapore about 7 years ago, I would hardly say it was experimental even then, it was not performed at least at that time by many doctors. The surgeon removed four core bone material from the side of her knee and inserted into the front...sorry not up on all the correct jargon. Anyway it was about 10000-12000 USD back then (all inclusive of doc, hosp, etc etc)...we had checked in the USA and the price would have been at least 2-3 times that amount.
