I just went online to order a new iphone 3gs. It says that documents needed for foreigners are copy passport and copy work permit. I don't have a work permit, but have a Permanent residence Book (and Alien Book). Does anyone know if you can use these to buy an iphone instead of a work permit? I called true customer service but they couldn't tell me!!

That should be IMHO absolutely sufficient! Permanent Resident!

assuming you are talking about AIS - visit their office Siam Paragon if you are in Bangkok.

Such things won't work over the phone or online

Yeah, I think I will have to go down to the True Shop in Paragon and ask there.

I don't see why they even need all that paperwork since I am paying for the phone in full when I pick it up and I'm not opening a True post paid account. Will use my AIS sim card.

Jack, you are probably right. Maybe this is just for people who are buying the phone with a price plan or are wanting a True tel number and package.

Wpermit is only needed for a postpaid plan not for buying a phone!

Yes that is all they ask for when making the booking, but if you read through the terms and conditons it says that to collect the phone you need passport and work permit.

You could avoid all the True hassles and just buy one from an authorised distributor. For example, I know that MacCafe and La Villa (Ari BTS station) has unlocked ones for sale there, and I would bet they don't require a work permit.

Then they are mistaken. Why would you need a work permit to purchase a phone at full price? You obviously don't. You might need one if you buy the phone on credit, or if you apply for a True postpaid contract.

Anyway, I was at the True store today and got my pre-order in, they asked for my passport and just over 2000 baht. A work permit was never mentioned. And I am very confident I won't need one come Aug 28th.

"Reservation for iPhone 3GS: 16 GB and 32 GB (“mobile phone”) and receipt of TrueMove Post Pay service covers the following conditions:"

Aren't you also signing up for "TrueMove Post Pay Services" ?

Is it sure that this phone can be bought and used with any SIM and no other obligations to (un)True ?

Yes, they told me at True that the phone is unlocked and you can use with any sim card.

Thanks for all yor comments. It sounds like the lack of work permit shouldn't be an issue...just don't want to turn up on the 28th Aug for my much awaited iphone for them to say no!!! :)
