Crime Pattaya Police Probe Mysterious Death of Chinese Man at Suspected Call Centre Base
Pictures courtesy of Kaoded Police are investigating the death of a young Chinese man who fell from a hotel building in North Pattaya, amid mounting evidence the premises were being used as a covert base for an illegal call centre scam. The incident occurred at approximately 15:30 on 4 July at a seven-storey hotel on Soi Paniadchang, Moo 6, Pattaya, Chonburi province. Pattaya City Police responded to reports of a man falling from the building. Officers at the scene included Pol. Lt. Aniruth Jaerah, Deputy Inspector, and senior officials including Pol. Col. Anek Srathongyu and Pol. Lt. Col. Arut Saphanon, alongside immigration officers, tourist police, forensic teams, and rescue personnel. At the base of the building, officers found the lifeless body of a Chinese male, estimated to be in his early twenties, lying face down in a pool of blood. He was dressed in a black t-shirt and shorts and had suffered fatal head trauma consistent with a fall from a significant height. An open balcony door on the sixth floor, directly above where the body was discovered, prompted investigators to inspect the level. All 16 rooms were vacant, yet signs pointed to the site having been recently used for organised operations. Officers uncovered a makeshift livestreaming room, a kitchen and laundry area, and a workspace that once housed multiple computers. Many of the rooms also contained sleeping quarters. In room 1615, which overlooks the spot where the victim landed, officers discovered no signs of a struggle. However, they recovered a Chinese passport identifying the holder as Mr Liu Song, aged 24. Forensic officers have since sent the body for a detailed post-mortem examination at the Police General Hospital in Bangkok to confirm the identity and determine the cause of death. CCTV footage obtained from the hotel’s basement revealed that at 14:20, more than ten Chinese nationals, both men and women, were seen hurriedly loading backpacks and computer equipment into a sedan and an SUV. They then sped away from the scene in a manner described by police as “suspicious and panicked”. This account is corroborated by residents living opposite the hotel, who reported seeing a flurry of Chinese individuals rapidly exiting the building during the early afternoon, many of them carrying bags and other belongings. Locals had long questioned the nature of the premises, noting it did not function like a typical hotel and was frequented by groups of Chinese nationals. The hotel itself had its signage covered with black fabric, and no staff were present when police arrived. Law enforcement officers suspect that the building had been repurposed into a base of operations for a transnational scam network, potentially linked to illicit call centre activities. However, they stress that no illegal activity has yet been confirmed. During the investigation, one Chinese man behaving nervously near the crime scene was detained for questioning. He claimed to be a tourist unconnected to the deceased, but authorities have not ruled out a link and are continuing inquiries. Pol. Col. Saichon Klin-kesorn, superintendent of Pattaya City Police, has ordered an urgent review of the hotel’s guest records and background checks on all individuals known to have stayed there recently. Investigators are also trying to identify those seen fleeing the premises in the CCTV footage. As of now, the circumstances surrounding the man’s death remain unclear. Police are examining whether the fall was accidental, a suicide or the result of foul play related to internal conflicts or a criminal cover-up.
