Dental Problems

Featured Replies

At long last I may be flying to Thailand in the next couple of days.

A problem has arisen in the shape of a huge absys on my left jaw, this has left me with a slight fever!

I saw a Dr today but she was very inexperienced, a lot of umming and arring, phoning her colleagues for advice etc etc. She advised against flying but, again,

seemed unsure, has any one flown with toothache or an absys?

I have an appointment at the hospital tomorrow and hopefully they will sort it out there and then. If they don't, I can't hang around any longer does anyone now a good dentist in Bkk or Koh Samui, or even Koh Tao or Koh Pha-ngan.

first you should find out if the abscess is related to a tooth problem , ( did the abscess start from a necrotic {dead} nerve in a tooth , is it due to a gum problem , is it at the back of your lower jaw and related to a wisdom tooth.

or is it not related to anything dental.

any dentist should be able to give you an accurate diagnosis , you may need an x-ray or two , and the dentist will examine your mouth.

dental abscesses can come up alarmingly quickly and can be very large , but dont be alarmed , the treatment is straightforward.

1. diagnosis

2. reduce the swelling with antibiotics and drainage through the tooth if suitable

3. treat the cause of the abscess either by root treating or extracting the offending tooth once the infection has subsided , or sort out the underlying problem if its related to a gum problem.

4. and the most important part of the treatment...... pay the dentists bill.

the first line of treatment for an abscess .... which is just an infection that has caused swelling in the infected tissues.... is to take some antibiotics.....if you are not allergic to penicillin , and the swelling is large , then a 3 gram dose of amoxil , followed by another 3 gram dose twelve hours later can work wonders in bringing down swellings .

on samui , try the big hospital on the main road in chaweng , just back from the beach. the dentist there has a good reputation.

in bangkok , there is a very good dental hospital near samitivej hospital in sukhumvit soi 41.

there are experienced dentists in samitivej , bangkok nursing home , bumrungraad hospitals

it would most definately be preferable for you to have it checked rather than just buying medication and treating yourself.

if this abscess is related to a tooth there are simple and painless ways of getting almost instant relief from the discomfort , but you need a dentist to do it for you if it is possible in your case.

be advised by the examining doctor or dentist about whether you can fly or not.

Thanks for your advice Mr Exile.

The problem is tooth related. I've now seen a doctor and a consultant dentist and have decided on the extraction option. So I will wait for the swelling to go down (I'm on Augmentine 500/125mg x3 a day for the swelling and Iibuprofen + Codeine 200/12/mg x6 a day for the pain) then fly to Thailand for the extraction.

Any ideas of what a tooth extraction may cost?

B

in thailand ???

if its a straightforward extraction of a tooth that is not broken down with decay , then anywhere from a couple of hundred baht to a thousand baht.

if its a broken down multi-rooted tooth or a wisdom tooth , then probably a fair bit more , due to the possible difficulty of the procedure.

thanks for that, looks like i'll be paying B1000+ for my broken decayed tooth to be removed, sound a bargain.
