I will be driving up north to Nongkhai tomorrow, and from there into Laos. But I have heard reports that you can no longer take the car into Laos. Does anybody know if it's still possible. And which documents are needed.

Cheers

Last time I took my car to Malaysia I had to show the blue book and buy an international insurance at the duty free shop in Satun. Procedure might be different in Laos.

Hopefully you already have the car "passport" from the Land Transport Department. Absent that document, forget it.

Hmmm, wonder if it's possible to get it from the LTD in Nong Khai rather than the province where your car is registered. Don't know, you can always ask.

If only travelling to Vientiane, not really worth the hassle, much easier to do the van-taxi option to Vientiane. Even on to Vang Vieng. I've left my car at the secure parking there at Nong Khai near the bridge many times, last time for 8-9 days in June, baht 100/day.

Can you provide more details of what paperwork you needed to take the car into Laos. What did you do for insurance?

you need to own your car outright, and have possession of the blue registration book which documents ownership. With that in hand, you can go to the deparment of land transport and apply for a car passport (a purple book).

You need both these things when you cross the border. At the border, there is a lot of form filling on both sides, but it is all pretty straight forward. Lots of detailed threads on this site about that.

When I got my car passport in CM I had to get a residence certificate from immigration, provide photocpies of passport and wait one day.
