I've had to come out now to work but for the last 3 hours the piercing intermittant sound of a dog could be heard around the area of On Nut market. On my way out I went to investigate and the dog was lying in an alley of the market next to one open shop with 3 women working peeling vegetables. The dog was seriously in pain...sprawled on the floor, faeces from lost bowel control, unable to stand up, panting in between its cries. The women said it was an old dog, ill, blind and now unable to stand up. They didn't know what to do about it and didn't know if any vets could come out. I can't see anyone trying to transport this dog to a vet.

Do you know any vet in On Nut that I could call to ask? I have no experience with dogs at all, but I'd be happy to pay a vet to end this dog's suffering...I'm not sure how many hours before this dog dies but in the meantime the suffering its enduring is difficult to stomach.

This is a difficult situation, many Thai vets (buddhist) will not end a life.

This is something that you might wish to do yourself.

I hope that the suffering did not last too long.

Thanks Paws for the PM and recommendation. This was my reply to him/her:

"You're very kind, thanks for this information. My wife has just tried to find any 24 hour clinics but apparently there are none. We've been out all day and returned 9pm. Someone has managed to get the dog onto a blanket just inside the market so it's sheltered for the rain, but as I speak it's barking/howling still and cannot move from the spot. I very much doubt it's able to eat or drink. I expect this to go all night again for the third night. It's definitely something I cannot ignore and if Dr Chokchai cannot come out, I'll TRY and find a truck/drivers who will pick the dog up (not something I'd like to try alone...). I feel bad for letting this continue another night but first thing tomorrow I'll be on the phone to Dr Chokchai."

There IS a 24 hour clinic. It is called Thonglor Pet Hospital and it is on Soi Thonglor. They also have other locations spread around the city.. you can check out their website.

As for euthenasia.. you CAN get a vet to do it there. You CAN also get the barbituates to do it yourself if you would like to have a more personal setting with you and your dog in his/her last moments. Foreign vets, dog rescues with attending volunteer Thai vets.. etc.... can get you a syringe of barbituates. You would be suprised how many of them are actually browsing and active commenters on ThaiVisa.
