Is I Is Or Is I Ain't? I Think I Is....

I was preparing my Laptop for Windows 7; making room by moving my stored pictures from there to my desktop computer when I stumbled on a photograph that kind-of made me laugh… Memories from the past…. Was my first visit to Thailand that long ago? Pictures of vendors taken years ago and I can remember taking the picture, where I was headed, where I was coming from and what time of the day it was.

I clicked on another, a face of someone who befriended me. I don’t remember their name and I guess I may never meet them again. I clicked on another picture and the memories came flooding back! Places visited but long forgotten. I clicked another photo, if is of food. I took a picture of food! I guess I must have been impressed with it because I took a picture of it! Next is a picture of the Train I am about to board to go to Chiang Mai, a pic of the squat toilet on the train, I remember taking that picture for conversation with family and friends back home.

Remembering my first visit to Thailand softened my heart and put me in the mindset to come back; to visit Thailand for the first time… AGAIN.

Will this trip be like my first trip? Can you capture lightening in a bottle? Not yet….

I can imagine it now… Rolex watch sir? No thank you. (I keep walking). Suite Sir? Not today. (I keep walking) DVD, Sex Video? Thanks, but no thanks. (I keep walking). Hey Sexy Man! “Hi” I say! “Can’t stop, going to church!” (I keep walking). Tuk-Tuk? No, my hotel is right there. (I keep walking). Sex Show Now Sir? I walked enough, who am I to refuse a comfortable chair and a cool beer?

Right now it is the little things I miss. The fruit shakes, Fresh roasted corn, the cool refreshing drink given to you as you check into your hotel, the typically Thai menu items found at McDonalds and Kentucky Fried Chicken that can’t be had in the USA. Visiting a restaurant and having the staff openly flirt with you, and if there are a group, pretend not to notice as they smile at you while nudging their friends/co-workers off to the side in a friendly and fun manner, going to an ATM and viewing your balance and for the first time (for me anyway) seeing your balance break a million! LOL

Yes, my heart has softened to the point that I am considering a return to Thailand in the coming months. I canceled my October Holiday and figured I would move it to November or December but I was not happy with the news I was reading as related to events in Thailand so I canceled my plans to visit in 2009. Now I am ready to consider a early 2010 visit.

I am considering a visit in February or March. I have never been there during those months as I have always visited in October or November. If any of you have useful advice for an early year visit I would hope you would share it with me!

Tourist season winding down, people desperate for that last score. Touts short on people to hassle. I think it might be too dangerous for you. :)

Hi Paul,

I would recommend going in February rather than in March. It starts to get hot in March, and February should still be pretty good weather (still dry season, and not too hot). I'm going in January and really looking forward to it!

I have fond memories of my first trip to Thailand too, which also included traveling to China and Cambodia. It was my first time going to Asia, and the first trip that I took overseas alone. It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life, and I have often wondered if it would ever be possible to recreate the experience of novelty and adventure that I felt at that time.

I think I would have to go somewhere completely different to even come close to it, but even then it wouldn't be my first time traveling alone, so it wouldn't make as deep an impression.

I am lucky in one respect and that is that the heat does not bother me. You would think that I was the spawn of the devil himself because I like it hot. I simply say "Oh well... it's hot, better enjoy now so I will have something to talk about when I am dead and buried.... :)

The only thing I don't enjoy is coming home to snow and ice after walking around in shorts and sandals.
