Characteristics And Habits

Featured Replies

Hi learners

Could someone help me, I want to say that someone has to remove all the bad parts of their character. Character flaws if you like. Something a monk may try to do through meditation.

I know the word "ni(h) Sai®", but this seems more like a habit to me.

I know "bukka likkaphap" for character.

I am certain that there are religious or other words for what I mean.

Thanks

NN

means to adapt , modify , correct or alter something that is wrong.

dtadt nisai , to improve your character.

its not a religious word , just an everyday word.

sorry , cant get the font size to change , its dor dek , myhanughat , dor dek

Changing the font size: Select the entire text you want to enlarge (place the mouse cursor in front of the first letter of the word/passage, then click and keep pressed the left mouse button, while moving the mouse to the right until you have reached the end of the word/passage. Let go of the left mouse button. Find the SIZE tag in the control bar above the post window. Left click the arrow to the right, choose your desired size in the drop-down menu. Now the text you selected will be surrounded by two tags like this (but without the spaces) [ SIZE=14 ]ดัด[ /SIZE ]

Every start tag must be finished with an end tag (the one that is preceded by a /). If there is no end tag, the tags will be visible, like in taxexile's post.

You have to remove all the bad parts of your character .

คุณต้องเลิกนิสัยที่ไม่ดีทั้งหมดของคุณkoon dtông lêrk ní-săi têe mâi dee táng mòt kŏng koon

นิสัย (ní-săi)is a common word ,while อุปนิสัย(oop ní-săi) and ลักษณะนิสัย( lák-sà-nà ní-săi) are more formal.

เลิก(lêrk) (informal), ขจัด(kà-jàt)(formal)and ละทิ้ง (lá tíng)(formal) all mean to remove.

ดัดนิสัย(dàt ní-săi) = to reform character

This word is used when someone do something wrong and you want to reform that one''s character by punishment.

"bukka likkaphap" บุคลิกภาพ = individuality, personality

บุคลิกลักษณะ (bòok-lí-glàk-sà-nà) = personal characteristic

บุคลิกลักษณะ (bòok-lí-glàk-sà-nà) =  personal characteristic

Judging by the Royal Institute Dictionary, the pronunciation of this word is also a personal characteristic! :D Or was it lifted from Thai2English? :o (Thai-language.com doesn't match the RID either.) The slow Thai Transcription Service does match, with /bùkkhá? líkkà? lák sà?nà?/, which it says is the best of 52 possibilities.

Sorry. :D I didn't check the pronunciation. I got it from thai2english.com. I hate to transliterate to roman alphabets . :D

Thanks a lot, that is exactly what I was looking for. คุณต้องเลิกนิสัยที่ไม่ดีทั้งหมดของคุณ is especially useful.

Richard W's post came just in the middle of while I was updating thai2english, and the pronounciation of words like บุคลิกลักษณะ  and อุปนิสัย is fixed there now.  :o

I've just reported the current fault - some bug's removing the vowels - at c. 11.30 GMT (6.30p.m. Thai time), so we don't need to deluge Mike with bug reports.

Thanks Richard, got your mail. อุปนิสัย looks like "(อุบ-ปะ-นิ-สัย) oop-bpà-ní-săi " to me at the moment, so I think it's an issue with the transliteration schemes that's causing the problem you've got with the vowels disappearing. If you've got it set to a different one to the default then it might not work for the moment. I'm working on it now :o

but how about ดัดจริต where instead of improving one's personality one becomes, like you know, really artistic and insightful, inscrutable and mysterious, producing deep and meaningless paintings which only oneself can understand?.

Or on another spectrum one becomes a mincing, hip swinging, squealing screaming ladyboy, sashing one's queeny way down the street.

Pretentious or affected, either way ดัดจริต doesn't look good

It worked fine once I'd wrenched the transliteration scheme back to default. I had to delete the cookies to do that!
