BANGKOK: -- Thai authorities on Saturday impounded a North Korean airplane that was found to be carrying war weapons, officials confirmed.

The pilot of the airplane had requested an emergency landing at Bangkok's Don Muang Airport to refuel. Authorities impounded the craft and detained four pilots and crew members after finding war weapons on board, according to the officials

Wow. I wonder where those weapons were headed for?

it was a governmental aircraft - going to korea or delivering cargo somewhere to another government in the region, but not thailand

35 tonnes can make the aircraft go in emergency situation ... i didnt knew that.. wow !

Those 5 North Korean only had enough arms and ammo to protect themselves if they went down over hostile territory! :)

Is that a lot? 35 tonnes?? Sounds like it.

No not really Boothy, obviously it depends on what aircraft it was that landed, but we have C-17's landing which much higher payload capable.

What was the country of departure for this aircraft?

Ukraine, according to Thai TV channel .

Is that a lot? 35 tonnes?? Sounds like it.

Um, yeah, you could say that.

It's approximately 9,200 AK47 rifles (no ammunition).

Or it's about 13,400 RPG rounds (single stage HEAT - 2.6kg each) (no launchers).

Or it's about 5,000 light machine guns ...

Or a combination of various bits and pieces. Enough to outfit a few hundred soldiers perhaps ...

Probably a load of old soviet weapons that some corrupt official sold to them.

.....the matter was now under the supervision of the Thai police.....

That's the weapons sold off then!!! :)

Why the detour so south to us?

Yes, I also wonder. It does not seem Thailand is on the way between Ukraine and North Korea.

Is that a lot? 35 tonnes?? Sounds like it.

:) Not even the weight of a tank... :D

Is that a lot? 35 tonnes?? Sounds like it.

1/2 a tank possibly... :)

Why the detour so south to us?

Yes, I also wonder. It does not seem Thailand is on the way between Ukraine and North Korea.

May be they think "oh, if we go through Russia or China and we need emergency landing then we're in deep sh*t. Let's then fly through all the 2nd tier countries"

Is that a lot? 35 tonnes?? Sounds like it.

Is Viktor Bout still here?

North Korean plane impounded, tons of weapons seized

BANGKOK: -- Five Eastern European men were detained and their plane was impounded and grounded at Don Muang Airport on Saturday after it was found loaded with tons of war weapons.

Government Spokesman Panithan Wattanayakorn declined to reveal where the plane was from and its its destination, saying Thai authorities are investigating the five men reportedly from Belarus and Kazakhstan.

A TV footage showed military trucks believed to be loaded with the confiscated weapons left Don Muang Airport. The footage also showed the grounded plane.

Thai TV reported that the weapons were transferred in the military trucks to a depot in Nakhon Sawan.

Panithan said the impound of the plane was the result of cooperation between Thai and foreign intelligence units.

Earlier Deutsche Presse Agentur reported that Thai authorities on Saturday impounded a North Korean airplane that was found to be carrying war weapons, officials confirmed.

The pilot of the airplane had requested an emergency landing at Bangkok's Don Muang Airport to refuel. Authorities impounded the craft and detained four pilots and crew members after finding war weapons on board, according to the officials.
