December 21, 200916 yr I'm visiting Thailand in Jan, and will be meeting a Thai friend who I went to grad school with a long time ago. I'm looking for some ideas on a gift. He has a tour business, mostly taking weathy Thais on tours overseas I think, so there's really not much I can bring that he couldn't get for himself, but I'd like to bring something, probably something consumable like a bottle of liquor. I don't drink, but he does (at least he used to), though in school he drank beer. So I'm looking for recommendations (coming from US) on what to bring, something that if he doesn't want can be re-gifted to his advantage after I leave. What kind of US liquor is most popular/most prestigious in Thailand? Of course something available from duty-free would be a plus. Also, if someone thinks another type of gift is better, I'm interested in hearing all suggestions. Thanks.
December 21, 200916 yr Johnny Walker Black is the big prestige item here. Note I said prestige, not best, etc. The locals have little appreciation of the finer things like single-malt, little known cognacs, etc. But seeing he is a world traveler he may well appreciate Laphroiag (sp?) single malt.
