Hi,

We are coming to thailand in feb. I was just wondering how cheap it is to get thai style furniture in bangkok, and how expensive it would be to ship home to australia?

does anyone have any prices or pictures of any furniture shops over there?

or is it just not possible?

also how hard is it to get it over here?

Thanks, My first post by the way, but have done lots of reading... great site!!

Technically speaking, if this is your first visit to Thailand, or you have not stayed more than 12 months here, you will be obliged to pay import duties on arrival in Australia.

You will need to contact a (reputable) moving company such as Asian Tigers (www.asiantigers-thailand.com) or someone similar who can guide you through the process.

As all household items will be examined on arrival by the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AQIS) you will need to ensure you are not buying items made from untreated wood, cane or rattan as this will surely result in VERY HIGH fumigation charges on arrival OR destruction fees.

Fumigation in Thailand DOES NOT guarantee that your goods will be exempt from Fumigation in Australia.

There are only a limited number of companies in Thailand that can offer you this (Methyl Bromide) fumigation service, recognized by AQIS so you will again want to make sure you are talking to a specialist to assist you with this.

Depending on where in Oz you are going the price for shipping a 20ft Container of Furniture - DOOR to DOOR - will range from around US$ 6,000 to US$ 8,500.

Try and clear customs in Australia with it yourself and you might save on paper but you are more than likely to end up paying ALOT more!

If you think you can make that much of saving on buying the same items at home (once you have calculated your import tax etc) go for it, but I personally would try and live here a year THEN do it OR find a fellow Ozzy who has lived here for 12 months or more and ask them to assist you by shipping it their name assuming :

  • The have no intentions of doing the same in the future.
  • Are returning home for any length of time so that they can be in the country when your stuff arrives.

Hope this helps.

A lot of furniture can be purchased here for less (not all) ..some of dubious quality

You can send almost anything to Australia..a good shipping/logistics company should take care of the fumigation and importing requirements. The fumigation process doesn't actually take that long (about 2-3 days).

Freight rates to the port are quite cheap..its the port to door than gets expensive depending on where you live

Handling can be a big issue

You will probably save money if you are trying to furnish your entire home...for one or two items its probably going to be a hassle

I shipped a 20 foot container of furniture from Bangkok to Perth 6 months ago - door to door - TOTAL cost $4,500 AUD.
