OK, I know that Sanam Luang has never been the prettiest park in Bangkok, but lately it looks like a cross between a car park and a refugee camp. Does anyone have any idea if the authorities are ever going to do something with the place? After all, it is in front of the main tourist attraction in Bangkok, if not Thailand.

I read that it was closed or meant to be closed for three-six months for re-sodding..but I guess this hasn't happened. If you think the place is an eyesore during the day...by night it's downright tawdry.

I used to work in this area and on my way home had to walk through it, it's one of the few places in Thailand I have actually felt unsafe to be in. One of my Thai friends observed " in Sananm Luang there are a lot of people without any money and education" a sort of reference to it not being too safe.I dont see the BIB doing too much about it though.

Seedy is another description one could apply.

That was the word I was looking for!

I ride my mountain bike through there all the time, day and night, never felt unsafe. There are many police and video cameras installed there.

It is a sad eyesore. If they could gentrify it into another Lumpini park I think that would be more fitting for its proximity to the Grand Palace. I walk through it occasionally to get a bus from Thammasat, but lately I've preferred taking a boat to Siriraj instead.
