I here alot of farangs here saying how Thai's dont like them and so on. To some point this can be ture everyone have different ways of thinking. But what is also ture that many Local thais (( southern thai's )) seem to like farangs alot more than thais from issan. I am married to a souther thai lady. I know from her and her family and southern friends that souther thai's think of thais from issan in the same way they think of burmese people.

I know alot of you will come in and say this is not ture. But nealry all of you who say that will find your wives/gfs are from issan and your partners problery do not no what souther thais think of people from issan.

So to all farangs out there dont think everyone hates you becuase its not ture. Farangs are thought better of than people from issan in southern thailand.,

In the very early, pre-tourism, pre-airport times, here on samui, poeple from Surat and further away, unless they were relatives, have been considered "Foreigners/Strangers" by the "Chao 'Mui" !

It was backwardness, not any specific positive notion of others then themselves!

It is a phenomena as anywhere in the world as in the US the "rednecks"... and, and, and.... nothing special!

Yes, it might be the special dialect and their kitchen the North Easterns stick to like dried latex sap to the tree!

But then it's up to them!

Regional differences and prejudices towards those people are common not only in Thailand but around the world. Southerners think Isaan to be country bumpkins that eat everything, Northerners think Southerners are jaidum,. In the US people from the North think Southerners are rednecks, people from the South of England have all sorts of lovely non complimentary names for Northerners. Many Germans I know do not consider Bavarians "real Germans'. Etc Etc Etc.

Its called human nature.

"Chao Mui" Actually means people of Koh Samui so I guess you are saying anyone who was not a local was not a "Chao Mui"? go to any small village and you will find the same attitudes, hardly isolated behavior to the islands.

nearly every country i know hates the north and north hates south. almost like office banter. the sales men hate the mechinic in the work shop the mechanic hate everyone in the building. eveyone hates someone. By gf is southern. i get similar words off her. also samui has a reputaion of being a mafia island. though the local people say that it is simpley not true. the locals just want to protect there place of birth and stop people from taking the busicuit too. much. i was told that when forang fiorst come here. they were more friendly towards us. but slowly the behavier of us got worse and worse.

Thailand people have power in the places where they are born. this is why we have to respect the locals. some of them give out alot of propblems though some of them also help you out of problems.

have been here for seven years now and have seen the island and the people change big time. infact i think that Koh Phangyan looks like it has learned off samui's mistakes. infact i liked Donsak even more . much more peaceful much more space plenty of beach land. more slower pace of life and people more helpfull. probably cause they are less stress with the large amounts of people.

I am sure this is true. And not just in Samui, but everywhere 'outsiders' move into 'foreign' territory. They start by loving all the differences. Then they take everything they can lay their hands on. Then they demand changes to suit them. Then war breaks out because the cultural differences are just too great!

OK a tad extreme perhaps :) but I am sure the principle is just the same?

Just my 2 cents to the OP.

I often don't show when i go in real thai restaurants bar party or whatever it is, that i can understand them.

I just listen to them . A lot of times "Chao Mui" (even Surat Nakorn and Hat Yai ) used to say : ''Kohn Isaan my pen Kohn Thai'' (Isaan people aren't Thai- in a very negative way).

Don't need to mention that many times they hardly understand each-others. Working with the two of them ,some days it's really amazing.

COME to think of it on esan related topics....

all the people from esan, whom i know, are almost all hard working persons.... hummmm

but statistically, i am certain that there are also wealthy esan persons.... but that i do not have the opportunity to meet them yet....

most esans who migrate to other regions of thailand, work on labor intensive businesses.... and many more work in tourist or entertainment related businesses as well....

as was pointed out before, a large percentage is less educated comparatively speaking.... therefore they distinguish themselves from the more educated population who are more affluent....

sad to mention.... it is true that thais in other regions do look at esan as an improverished province because of its lack of natural resources and somewhat less than desireable living conditions, particularly its people.... as less educated and disadvantageous in many different areas....

but then, personally i think esan people do have many many admirable personal characteristics, most are friendlier, easily approachable, hard working and willing to help out.... than thais from other regions who are more self-centered and more self-serving....

as for the comment that thai people do not like farangs.... that kind of comment and thinking is totally and absolutely absurd....

most thai love farangs.... especially those farangs who conform to the thai norms.... and behave themselves as ladies and gentlemen....

but if you think that you are superior and can do and say what you want.... then you are making yourselves UNLIKEABLE AND DETESTABLE IN ANY COUNTRY....!!!!

in reality, it is not thailand nor the thai people who do not like you but that you make yourself unlikeable and detestable....

for the minority of farangs who think that thai people do not like them.... ask yourselves this question--if thai people were in your own countries and would act and behave like what you did in thailand.... would you and your people like their behaviors....? it is an interesting thought, isn't it?

Brilliant! I'm not an expert on regional differences in Thailand, but people hate people everywhere for all sorts of reasons. This is human nature.

Without entering into any discussion or speculations on this issue, I want to point out a striking difference I observed from the car travelling South of BKK. Clean roadsides and outdoors of all houses.

This is a fact. I am not even trying to explain it. Usually Thai people are OK with personal hygiene, but the filth of the land around their homes is notorious. Not so South of Hua Hin. Why the rest of Thailand looks like one huge rubbish tip really beats me. :)

Cheers!

Really? We drove from Issan to Samui in December & I spent a lot of time in the passenger seat & couldn't see any difference.

I even remembering thinking how poor some of the areas looked & how the lack of care in their homes & surroundings seemed to me to be a country wide thing. Of course near Hua Hun & Cha-am things were spruced up but I take that as a reflection of the tourism trade.

As for the south people not liking Issan, sbk got it spot on. They all have something negative to say about each other.

Also think of this, outside of Samui & possibly part of Surat, being from Samui means nothing to mainland Thais. It isn't anything special to them so really, do you think that thais who go to the islands to work really care what local Thai think of them?

in reference to hua hin....

it is quite cleaner in general.... and there is a very special good reason....

the royal family members have a formal residential palace in hua hin which i am certain everyone knows already.
