I'll probably buy a Samsung laptop soon. Has anyone bought one? If so, were there any quality issues?

On a separate but related point, is there much difference between DDR2 and DDR3 RAM?

Samsung makes some well-regarded netbooks but have not seen much about their laptops proper.

DDR3 is now coming in as the mainstream memory format; DDR2 was the earlier and is still in very broad use. The two are NOT interchangable, go with what the computer requires.

I use a computer for browsing internet, mailing, word processing, storing videos, music and photos. Last weekend was looking at Samsung's R478 and X418, and was impressed; to my semi-dummy eyes they look ideal for what I need.

But having the operating system as DOS confuses me, I thought that died out years ago - does that mean I have to purchase an OS on top of the listed price for the computer? Naturally, the salesman offered to install Win 7 free (via Pantip of course!).

Sorry if it's a dumb question, but we all have to learn eh?

Thanks,

Elwood

At the risk of sounding like a broken record...

Begin by reading this topic: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Laptop-netbo...fo-t319781.html

The primary benefit of DDR3 is the ability to transfer at twice the data rate of DDR2 (I/O at 8× the data rate of the memory cells it contains), thus enabling higher bus rates and higher peak rates than earlier memory technologies. In addition, the DDR3 standard allows for chip capacities of 512 megabits to 8 gigabits, effectively enabling a maximum memory module size of 16 gigabytes.

Yes that means you get to choose your operating system.

Thanks Lopburi3 - so this old codger has now learned something else about the computer world!
