Not surprised... seen a few these dodgy orange man requesting donations in Pattaya. Anyone with any sense knows proper monks would never do this.

Incorrect Brit. (not to say there ain't an army load of dodgy/fake monks :) )

Nationwide fundraising drives for temples are common. (albeit a rarity in tourist areas)

However, they will have correct (and extensive) documentation, much like a business prospectus, that will/should be given to the donor in all instances.

Why does it always bring a smile to my face when I read Pattaya and Buri Ram in the same sentence?

We were driving out of Tesco in S. Pattaya a few weeks ago. A monk was near the exit and motioned for us to stop. He was on my wife's side of the car.

Not knowing what was going on, we did. He asked for money, saying he needed to get back to Buriram. Stunned, my wife handed him 100B. After we left, she was pretty upset. Saying monks are not suppose to do that. I asked why did you give him money then? She said she was so shocked by the question she just gave him the bill. We now know not to stop next time!

I know in Nepal and India there are money monks. Their only reason for dressing up is to beg for money. I gave a guy a small amount, and got this great pic!

Well tapping you on shoulder like ordinary touts is a big sign of major begging. Monks just don't do that.

Used to get regular visits from out of town monks and their assistants asking us to collect money. My cashier was too polite, so we took the bucket and the sticks for the money, put it out the back and returned it when they came to collect a few weeks later. Never got the hint from the cover of dust. :)

It has to be the tennis shoes they are wearing that's the give away. :)

Not being a knowledge person on monks/begging, I am skeptical when a monk would directly receive money from a woman, a monk enters a bar/entertainment establishment asking for money, etc. In CM the public soliciting/requests seem to come from laypeople although a monk may be observed riding in a vehicle, maybe monitoring collection process?
