its a sign of beauty or something isnt it, but usually i see them shovelling snot out of their noses with them

I might add that when students are in school there is regular inspection of fingernails. They are routinely cut, so for some it is likely just a reaction to this.

This is true, I asked a guy who I worked with and this is the explanation he gave me.

Had gambling uncle in law who told me his fingernail was long so he could mark the cards. This is also the man who had a really bad fighting fish that always lost. Gave it to someone else, and then when it fought, bet against it.
