its a sign of beauty or something isnt it, but usually i see them shovelling snot out of their noses with them

I might add that when students are in school there is regular inspection of fingernails. They are routinely cut, so for some it is likely just a reaction to this.

Not that many Thais have long finger nails.

It is a very Chinese thing.

And for the people who really do not know... :)

It is for the same reason that the Thai girls want to be white.

If you're white, you do not work in the fields.

If you have long finger nails, you can't really have a manual job.

So, white and long finger nails are probably the best... :D

It's called snuff finger and it's the snuff innit! A very dirty and sordid habit that is kep extremely private.

As is a few hairs growing out of a mole on their faces. :)

Stretch your hand out, palm facing you. Your little finger is likely shorter than the second joint on the finger beside it. They grow the fingernail so its longer. For good luck.

This is true, I asked a guy who I worked with and this is the explanation he gave me.

Had gambling uncle in law who told me his fingernail was long so he could mark the cards. This is also the man who had a really bad fighting fish that always lost. Gave it to someone else, and then when it fought, bet against it. :)
