You have two options for extensions starting at age 50, by marriage or retirement. Retirement is the simpler application and the requirement for that is 800K in a Thai bank for three months or an embassy income letter or income/bank account combination of that amount.

You do not have to deposit that much in a Thai Bank if you can prove a regular monthly income (about 40,000 baht, but do check that). For instance I have three Pensions and I am required to provide proof of these incomes to my Embassy (in fact we have an Honourary Consul on the Island who does it on behalf of the Embassy), he in turn provides a letter on Embassy headed paper confirming my monthly level of income. The service costs about 2,000 baht. It saves a considerable expenditure going from Koh Samui to Bangkok and depositing a large sum of money in a Thai Bank on which you receive no interest. Hope this helps. :)

Financial requirements for extension of stay based on retirement are: 800k in Thai bank 2 months before first application OR 65k/month income OR combination of the two to reach 800k.

Financial requirements for extension of stayed based on marriage are: 400k in Thai bank for 2 months before first application OR 40k/month income.

12 Month Extension for retirement aged 50.

65,000 Baht a month income OR 800,000 Baht in a Thai bank OR a combination of the two.

12 month extension for marriage to a Thai Lady.

40,000 Baht a month income. OR 400,000 in a Thai bank.

Thanks for the correction. Yes for retirement anyway it is indeed two months for the first extension, and THREE months for all subsequent extensions.

One message with a quote that was changed removed - do not make changes to quotes.

Thai banks do indeed pay interest - and on a passbook savings account it is done in June and December each year. Currently interest rates are very low however.

Either 400,000 baht or 40,000 per month income.

And no you dont have to leave Thailand at all but you do have to report to your local immigration every 90 days to confirm your address.

Either 400k in Thai bank for 2 months before first application (2/3 months for renewals - depends on immigration office) with bank letter confirming balance - to agree with passbook. Or 40k/month income. If income from abroad will need embassy income letter, if from within Thailand will need tax receipts.

You can renew your extension of stay each year at Thai immigration as long as you meet the requirements (no need to leave).

thanks for that happy larry and thaiphoon

so let me get this correct as i find it all very confusing, what visa do i need when i first leave the uk?is it an o visa then apply for a marriage visa in Thailand?also is a marriage visa at any age?also except for the 400k baht in a thai bank account what are the other requirements for a marriage visa

thankyou so much for the wonderful advice.

I believe you can arrive in Thailand with a visa on entry if you like, then apply for an extension for 60 days at any immigration office by reason of marriage cost 1900bht. Then you can put your money in the bank account and start the marriage extension process.

Or pretty much any other Visa will do.

Apply for a Non Imm O Visa. It is easier with one. That will be no problem in UK.

On arrival in Thailand open a bank account and deposit the 400,000 Baht.

After the money has been in the bank for 2 months apply for the extension.

Other things are needed but will not be a problem. Ask again a bit nearer the time.

No need to be 50 years old.

You best option is to obtain single entry Non-O visa from the consulate at Hull (apply by post). That will give you 90 days permission to stay on entry and will allow time for funds to season. You should apply at Thai immigration for your extension of stay during the last 30 days of your permission to stay (note it is not a visa), bringing with you the wife (for interview and to sign affidavit), her ID card, tabbien bahn (house book), marriage certificate, photos together around the home, map to home, completed application form TM7, passport, copies of passport/TM6 departure card and current passport sized photos. If using the bank balance option you will need a letter from bank confirming the account balance and copies of bank book. If using income option you will need to obtain an income letter from your embassy if income is from overseas. Cost 1,900 baht. Most offices are now asking also for Kor Sor 2 (copy of marriage register - so may need to register marriage details at amphur) and you may have to provide two witnesses to your living together (this is a new thing at some offices) so best to check before you go.

You will get a 30 day under consideration stamp and immigration will give you a date to go back and get the remainder of your extension. You will need to report your address to immigration every 90 days but do not have to leave the country. For most offices 90 day reporting can be done by post. If you plan to travel abroad during the period of the extension you will need to obtain a re-entry permit from immigration to keep your permission to stay alive. Fee 1000 baht single entry; 3800 baht multi entry.

(Print the two-sided form on a single sheet of A4 sized paper, or obtain/complete at immigration)

The Op runs the risk of the airline refusing him boarding as he will not be in possession of an air ticket out of Thailand within 30 days of arrival, so he should apply for a visa before travelling. Single entry Non-O visa is best as will give 90 day permission to stay on entry which will allow time for funds to season before applying for extension of stay based on marriage.

Thanks litebeer and thaiphoon

very very helpful, one more thing we were married in the uk five years ago, will our uk marriage certificate be ok or will we also have to marry in Thailand?

Posted

You will have to have it verified by the UK Embassy, translated into Thai and registered with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then register it at a District Office. It is not a marriage but a ledger entry that you are legally married. They will then give you a form in Thai to that effect that Immigration now wants to see for extensions of stay.

If you do not want an extension of stay you do not have to go through above procedure until you do. But it sounds harder than it actually is.

Thanks,it sounds alot easier just to get married in thailand again.

That is not possible as you are already married and would not legally obtain the paperwork to allow a marriage in such a case. The above process can be done in a couple of days without help and an agency could do in even less time.

You receive interest in bank accounts here .....

Really lopburi3,my wife and i were not aware of that,we were going to register a marriage when we next go to bkk, what paperwork do we actually need?

You will need your marriage certificate and do the process listed in post 17.

But there is no hurry on that process as it is only required when you make the application for extension of stay using the 400k/40k method. You do not need the District Office marriage ledger receipt to obtain visas for 90 day entry.
