Transport And Travel Question

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Australian arriving in bangkok from Phuket (2 adults 2 kids)in feb 2004 and wanting to rent a rough cheap car for travel up to chiang mai then through cambodia to vietnam and back to bangkok.(round trip about 2 months.)

Is this possible? if so I could really do with some route advice on getting from chiang mai to saigon (easiest ,nicest ,safest route) also wondering what I could expect to pay for a rough rental car for that type of period and if I can drive a rental car from thailand to vietnam?

Alternatively what other cheap transport options would be available for this route?

thanks.

I'm not completely sure of the route you are planning but assume BKK to CM, car/other, then CM to VN.

If you rent in Bangkok, it goes back to Bangkok. You get it there except AVIS or HERTZ, but you said cheap so forget that option.

CM we can do a cheapie, 4 seat 4x4 at about 17K for the month, less depending on the time you are here, (dates, not period).

Can't go out of Thailand without a Tabien Lot which is the car ownership paper.

Cheap CM to VN have to leave to others, but essentially you can't take a rental out of the country. There are exceptions in Nong Khai and Mae Sai, not sure about the south but sure of those two because I have done it. The reason I say "you can't" is a visa issue. You will be on tourist.

Get me on MSN Messenger if you want to chat in depth about your options.
