PATTAYA:-- On Friday Morning at Pattaya City Hall, Khun Ronagit, Deputy Mayor of Pattaya chaired a meeting to discuss the continuing problems with Jet Ski Scams involving operators on Pattaya and Jomtien Beaches. The meeting was told that Tourists are complaining on a daily basis to city officials about the Jet Ski Operators who are asking for large amounts of money for so-called damage to the Jet Ski’s.

Here we go again, same shit spoken by a few gutless cronies on the council, and then nothing happens.

And what was on the agenda at the meeting?

Hasn't the same complaints been made by tourists at just about every beach resort in Thailand for donkeys years, yet they've only just decided there is a problem?

Some years ago when i lived in Phuket due to the never ending scams against tourists by the Jet Ski tow-rags it was stated by the big wigs on the council that no new Jet Ski operators licence's would be issued and that jet ski's would eventually be fazed out.

That was over ten years ago and if anything it's got worse.

This is the way of the Pattaya City godfathers, meetings about meetings of meetings then somewhere along the way the meetings of meetings about meetings of meetings gets lost and forgotten about and nothing ever changes. Heck, they could'nt even get the deckchair fiasco sorted out, jetskis no chance!! way different mafioso involved there for sure!! Violence against tourists by jetski scum, I remember reading about a tourist being beaten up by the jetski operators on Pattaya beach but not about any satisfactory outcome relating to those responsible for the beating!! The powers that be here are , well, basically powerless!

The solution to the jet ski problem is humongous, It will probably never have enough resources, money, planning, etc. to sort it out. Put out a international plea for funds to finance a study, fund the study group with expense paid, plus expense of the presentation of study, expense for meeting between jet ski operators and study group, when designated funds are depleted as well as bank loan secured while awaiting international fund arrival, finally, admit negotiations have come to a halt.

Now the simple solution is forgive the outstanding debts of those in the business and put 2000 more jet ski in the hands of the deck chair , noodle stand, umbrella, etc, vendors and let the devil/god sort it out.

A few months ago they were talking about implementing an insurance scheme in Phuket. Did anything come of it? Could be the answer here as well.

Otherwise, the answer is that people will continue to post on the internet and hear and read stories in the international press about the scams and decide not rent jet-skis in during their Thai holidays. When it starts to hit the operator's bottom line...they will be open to regulations.

You can have the best intentions in the world with appropriate rules attached. But alas if the enforcement is corrupt, exarcebated by a lack of accountability and transparency...well, might as well just have meetings and make the right noises so everyone can pretend Pattaya is well on its way to some semblance of normality.
