Which Services/Apps To Replicate Skype's "Calling To U.S. Landline And Mobile Numbers"?
Seems to be several. Some of the friends already have a Voice account, so they're not able to make a second one, as their mobile number, which is needed to receive the code for creating the account, is already tied to a Voice account. Google limits Voice to a single account per mobile number. Then some, especially iphone users, are hesitant about the whole process of making a Google account, downloading the Voice app, and making the Voice account, in whatever order the accounts are made, then receiving the code...lot of people, my friends, older folks, are just not versed in this stuff. (And my older friends in U.S. are all on 'unlimited talk and text' plans these days, so the idea of the need for other calling apps don't really register.) I'll add, some people in the U.S. are just very hesitant about their numbers being used for things. They have been dealing with spam calls over the years. Not easy to overcome concerns their number being used in this manner might result in them being vulnerable to spam calls, or worse, or a security risk? I don't know. But it's been tough to get Voice going. -

Government hospital cardiac surgery bill
Yes but Thais including government agencies (and including many farang) are very poor at communicating anything and that includes changes / updates to regulations etc. My Thai daughter in law's mother had a serious heart condition, the local upcountry hospital was very small, head dr, and 1 more doctor. Stubborn head dr. refused to sign and documents for the old lady to be moved to a much bigger much better hospital 100 km away which had a lot of modern equipment and well capable of the heart surgery the old lady needed. Head dr. insisted this was not allowed by the 30Baht regulations. The old lady died. A family member (senior in another ministry) conduced some research and discovered a notice which cancelled the rule the stubborn dr. was quoting several years previously. More investigation and the notice was found buried in one of the big piles of old correspondence on the stubborn dr's desk. Stubborn dr. was reminded that all staff should have been advised about the change of policy. Stubborn old dr. insisted 'they don't need to know'. A team was formed in each majn province tasked to go to every hospital, give briefings and a pack of all notices for the preceding 10 years to all staff. Attendance compulsory. Stubborn old dr. was quickly given early retirement. The lack of communications / not keeping people informed is par for the course for my own Thai family. extended -

Which Tyres To Buy?
I'm surprised you haven't put some r20s on with a stiffer sidewall. As mine is an auto, I don't find the cornering as satisfying as a manual. At the same time I'm surprised how much grip the Ranger has. Before I bought one I heard trucks were death traps. In reality, the cornering is great and it's cruising speed is beyond the legal speed limit. -

Trump's 4D Chess Match
The two turning points were 1913 (introduction of income tax and creation of the private banking oligarchy called The Fed) and 1973 (abandonment of the gold standard). Any endeavour to come back to the situation prior to 1913 is a good endeavour. October 2024: Trump floats ending the federal income tax. Here’s what that would mean “When we were a smart country, in the 1890s … this is when the country was relatively the richest it ever was. It had all tariffs. It didn’t have an income tax,” Trump said after a barber asked whether it would be possible to jettison the federal income tax. “Now we have income taxes, and we have people that are dying. They’re paying tax, and they don’t have the money to pay the tax.” https://edition.cnn.com/2024/10/26/politics/trump-income-taxes-tariffs/index.html -

Credit card fees
I'm currently applying for a credit card with Kasikorn Going through the terms and conditions, I stumbled on the below remark, which I find very strange, as I would think Visa and MasterCard are able to convert any major currency directly to Thai baht. I called Kasikorn call center, and they didn't have a suiting answer. I look on the UOB website, and they have an identical remark for their credit cards. Since an overseas payment carries a 2.5% bank fee on top of the exchange rate, does this mean that there are 2 exchanges if your transaction is for example in Euro, and as such also 2 x 2.5% fee? Even if not twice a fee, exchanging from Euro to USD, and then from USD to THB, for sure will result in an unfavorable exchange rate. And can anyone explain what these fees are?
