How much of the passion we feel for the game is to do with our emotional attachment to our team, and how much of it is to do with the game itself?

If we all loved the game so much, surely we would be watching matches that didn't in some way involve our own team - whether that be directly when our own team is playing, or indirectly when a rival team plays that we want to see lose? Most of the football fans i know, including myself, rarely do watch other games.

Perhaps it's because we simply don't have the time? Or perhaps it's just that without having an emotional connection, the game just isn't that entertaining?

For example, hands up who watched the Inter / Barca game last night?

Posted (edited)

I thought about watching the game last night but I simply don't care who wins. I think with any UK team there's more emotion involved either way of course which makes it more enjoyable. Shame really reckon I missed a good game.

Edit I did however have the misfortune of watching the Liverpool/West Ham game the previous night.

ill try to watch as often as posssible epl, with every game live it would be difficult to see every game live,

so i obviously have the present misfortune often watching every west ham game,

then i try to watch what i think would be an edge type match or what i reckon would be the most entertainment,

spl games i will watch now and sgain,

bundeslige , just dont care really ,

serie a dont care

la liga dont care

champs leage very occasionally

fa cup and world cup, nearly watch all games, as much as poss anyways,

i will watch as often as ican the football round ups and talk shows, and also even replays of games,

summing up, i just love watching football, but its impossible to watch every game , i also

read a lot from internet for news and reports and follow even obscure statistics

Sadly I did not watch it Rix (last night's CL) -does that make me bad?

I watch all UTD games regardless of time /day and usually watch the re-run the next evening.

Some matches I enjoy more than others - Spurs Chelsea and especially the Wenger Meltdown vs Wigan were fantastic.

Thankfully because True really doesn't show anything else worth watching, I take every opportunity to watch other matches from the EPL, La Liga and Serie A either live or rerun.

That game was part of what got me thinking about all this.

I recorded it and sat down with a cup of tea to watch it the day after. Thought it would be a nice way to spend 90 minutes. Wasn't really too fussed about who would win. Usually i would have been cheering on the Hammers, as quite a few mates support them, but on this occasion i was in two minds as some (Singhy boy for one) have said that if they are safe from relegation come their game against City, they will shamelessly bend over.

Anyway, all that aside, about ten minutes in i found my hand wandering for the remote when the ball went out of play to speed things along a bit and before i knew it, i had fast-forwarded through pretty much the whole game, barring watching the goals. I just couldn't muster any enthusiasm. Maybe that was just because it was a crap game....nah, poor excuse - with the speed they were flying around my screen i couldn't pass an opinion on if it was crap or not. Truth is, i just wasn't interested.

Nice try James, but if you want someone to call you a bad boy, there are services out there (so i'm told :) ).

It was a wise decision. Definite candidate for worst performance of the season. And West Ham weren't much better! (only joking :) )

To be honest Rix, you are not my type - perhaps you should speak to Gary Neville, looks like he is up for it. :)

rix, its not that we WANT city to be 4th, the one and only issue is we DONT WANT spuds to be 4th

for example if utd were playing in a similar game and utds result could detrmine city getting somthing like 4th place, or 5th place what would you want?, providing utd drawing or losing didnt affect utd,

besides come the last day we may have to beat city to survive

interesting thread and perhaps something of a sign of modern times. i began watching football, as probably most did on here, when the only way you could really see a match was to go to it. so i tend to equate the 'loving' of football as following your chosen team home and away through wind and rain and financial strife etc.

few years ago i used to watch as much as i could get my hands on, english, french, spanish, italian, south american. . . .that's changed since i've lived in thailand, partly because of the time difference, partly because i can't be arsed so much now. still watch every liverpool game regardless but i can't watch at home, have to watch it down the pub to drown the predictable sorrows.

I watched the semifinal 1st leg last night. Inter deserved to win but I think they were fortunate it was by a two goal margin. I would now make them favourites to reach the final. I feel they are capable of scoring in the 2nd leg.

The time difference is a huge disadvantage for watching midweek night games in Thailand. I watch a huge amount of games every season.

with your pack of ciggies on the right and beer on the left correct?

perhaps its time to change your luck mate :)

My love for the game started at a very early age when I went to Stamford Bridge with my dad.I remember watching Stanley Matthews and hiding behind the pitch wall terrified that he would cause mayhem in the Chelsea defence. The anticipation of watching a match come Saturday was unbearable.Later,it was going to every game home and away.Now.it's the armchair in my living room hurling abuse at the box in the corner.I still love the game and my club but I've grown to hate players.

I think we can all relate to that mate. Over-paid, self-absorbed primadonnas a lot of them are.

Believe me, Tottenham supporters and the team know West Ham will "bend over" if they can for their game against City and thats why we'll go for broke to secure 4th before the final day :)

To be honest, I have probably got a compulsive problem.

I watch EVERY live game, immaterial of what league ( unless games run concurrently, in which case I end up flicking from one to another)

For example on a Saturday, starts off with SPL, then the 1st EPL game (early kick off) the 9pm game and the 1130pm game. Intermingled with Serie A and concluding with Spanish League. So its basically 10 hours non stop football, go to bed around 4-5am.

Sunday, starts with Dutch League around 530pm, then whatever EPL games, with the SeRie A and Spanish Leagues.... again bed at 5am.

EVERY mid week game, regardless of time. EPL,Champions League,.

I have even been known to watch the Bundesliga :)

The older I get, the more addicted I become.

The only games I do not watch are friendly games!!

Doesnt make me popular with the Mrs, but I guess I just love football :D
