Just wondered every time I take my car into fill up, they want to put in 91 Extra/Alpha X, have always used 95 Gasoil but is that correct ?

Older Audi A6

Posted

depends how old and which model . I think post about 1998, most Audis are adapted for 10% ethanol mix ie gasohol in Thailand, but not all ,certain variants cannot use gasohol. best to check with Audi or safer (i think) to use benzene 91 or 95 which i think is what they keep trying to fill you up with (sorry not familiar with the brand you mention). i have a newish Audi and try never to put any gasohol in if i can help it, 500 bt maximum if desperate. cf other thread on 95 benzene availability.

It's as simple as the attendants just being conditioned to offering the cheapest gas is all...

91 Extra/Alpha X is way more expensive than 95 gasohol..

Maybe you mean the other way round ?

EDIT:

95 gasohol is about 31 baht

91 Extra/Alpha X about 35 baht

Or conversely this attendant is the one that got it right.... Seeing that he was driving a high end car and should want what the attendant sees as the best fuel for his car thinking that it is more about blend then just octane... The others have been conditioned and that also follows the usual thought process in Thailand you're lucky if you get ONE that gets it right...

Either way I think it still boils down to this and the consumer should be educated accordingly so it's never left up to a minimum wage attendant..

I'd go with that - the OP did state it was an 'older' A6, so chances are that means old enough that the fuel system was never designed for Ethanol blended fuel. It doesn't mean the attendant is wise to this kind of thing though - it could just mean he's been abused by owners of older cars for putting the wrong fuel in, and has got a half decent memory :)

Oh and BTW OP, it's 'gasohol' not gasoil :D

Being dyslexic can only correct words that the spell checker corrects.. very often have to re word something because word checker has ‘No Suggestions’ Gashoil is how it sounds.. word checker changed to gasoil.. thanks will try to remember, but with my memory.. :D

Have always filled up at the same station for the past 6 years, was JET now PTT, they have 91, 95 Gasohol or 91 Extra/Alpha X, when I bought the car in 2008 the Guy had owned the car for 10 years said he filled with 95 Gasohol….

Just wanted to know if this is correct and what this much more expensive 91 Extra/Alpha X ?

Sorry Warp, missed that! yes, you're right :D

I guess the word 'conditioning' didn't conjure up images of runty driveway attendants peeing their pants as some high-ranking officer lambasted them for their stupidity... as I was thinking when I wrote my reply :)

Teribly sorry Ignis, I didn't mean to offend with that spelling correction :D

The previous owner couldn't have been filling the car up with Gasohol for it's entire previous life, as gasohol was only introduced to Thailand in 2003 - and even then it was difficult to find, plus it was actually more expensive than benzene 91 until 2005.

Given the age of the car and the type of money you could be looking at for repairs, I personally wouldn't be running gasohol in it, if it were mine. The fuel system components just wouldn't have been designed using metals/alloys specifically to cope with the water content that comes as a side-effect with Ethanol blends.

Still, if the car hasn't had any problems after 5+ years on gasohol, it's either very close to having them, or it never will :D I hope the latter :D

No worries, after 60 years of being unable to know b or d and how to spell, at least the last 20 odd years with a PC people know what I am on about, unless I write in German then sure often the sentence is the wrong way round.. Do wonder why spell checkers are always in US English? Lots of words have different spelling in UK English, anyway that is a different subject.

In the car around here there is little option but PTT, did see one time when I filled up with B5 in the Truck at a Shell station they also had 91 + 95 + V Power grade 91 + 95?

So should I use normal 91 ? or this other one they always want to put in 91 Extra/Alpha X ? [the 91 Extra/Alpha X is over 7 baht more expensive than normal 91 per lt]

The only problem I have with the Audi is at start up, always starts 1st time, but runs rough and lumpy as if only 3 injectors work, dip the accelerator 1 or 2 times and the engine picks up and runs sweet, makes no difference if the engine has not run for a few days or is hot.

Worth trying pure 91 benzene for a while, that may help as your problems could be related to the ethanol. I dont ever use PTT except in an emergency so i am not familiar with their line up, however if you simply ask for " benzene gow nung " they should point you in the right direction.

Many thanks will give it a try... reading another Post yesterday from last year guy has a Audi S6 and gets 10 - 11 km per lt with Shell Extra... nearest Shell station to me is about 40km away :) .... I have only a A6 but re the on-board computer I get between 7.2 and 8.2..

Do have a Celtax [spelling] station where I always fill the truck up, maybe see what they have petrol wise.

Shell no longer sell pure benzene sadly, Caltex still sell it though, caltex gold (not sold in all outlets) is benzene 95 and they also sell benzene 91 (in all outlets)

Most ethanol issues occure within 20k km/one year. usually damaged gaskets, orings and fuelpumps, which again can clogg the combustionchambers parts with black sh-t. If its run 5 years on 95, I doubt E10 will damage anything.

Most Audis for EU was never designed to run lower octane than 95, some of them need 98. However this car could be an US/Asia edition accepting 91.

If its an inline5 (2,2 or 2,3 depending on year) or the VR6 2,8, they run well on LPG which brings a lot of water through the fuelsystem

I would continue 95 Gasohol E10 due to the higher octane, and the vehicles long history with this fuel

If your sparkplugs are not black, and your fillercaps gasket is not damaged, its not likely engine or fuelsystem is harmed by 5 years using E10.

Even better, Caltex often has 95 benzine as has been discussed they seem to be the only one carrying it lately..
