What a great conversation! It's such a pleasure to talk reasonably and articulately (and moderately) about American politics.

Butterfly, I understand your frustration- believe me, I do. However, I'm reassured by little things- by the fact that a friend I had who seemed to be a bit of a Bush apologist the first few years has now given it up completely to be a critic. One sees all of these diehard figures from what would normally be regarded as the right writing in horror at what is happening in the United States- I saw an essay on a Christian website written by a diehard fundamentalist Baptist preacher with impeccably scary conservative credentials talking about how the religious political interest will take decades to recover after it eventually gets shouldered with some of the blame that Bush's administration will eventually receive. Even my mother, whose typically alien American notion of politics is to vote for whichever candidate is against abortion, has been shaken to the core by the way the country has gone (it may have to do with having lost most of her retirement money in Bush-led financial mismanagement). Fewer and fewer people that I meet are willing to admit in public supporting Bush in any way. It's becoming embarrassing to them- I imagine 5-8 years later, it will be just as unfashionable to admit supporting him as to admit supporting Nixon was after Watergate.

We have to hope that when things have gone too far, the decent core of people at the center of American politics will do the adjusting for us. It may not go as far left again as we'd like, but it will be sane again. I think our goal should be to instill laws which prevent a similar hijacking of American government in the future, because no matter if it's the right or left or the Bush machine which does it, it's not good for the people.

I hope you can have faith and not adopt the values of the enemy- which is to say, fascists of any political species.

How do you propose to circumvent the Democratic process to achieve this 'goal'? :o

Speaking for myself as no die-hard Dubya apologist, the moonbat left want to blame him for every calamity under the sun these days. Expect to see hurricane Rita blamed on him as well.

How about this one boys?

The Church of England wants to apologize to Muslim leaders for the Iraq war .

LONDON (AFP) - The Church of England offered to take the lead in reconciling with Muslims by apologizing to their leaders for the US-led war in Iraq if the British government fails to do so.

The proposal was contained in a report, entitled “Countering Terrorism: Power, Violence and Democracy Post-9/11” which written by a working group of the Church of England’s House of Bishops.

“We do believe that the church has a visionary role for reconciliation, beyond that of any government,” the Bishop of Oxford, Right Reverend Richard Harris, told BBC radio.

“The Christian church in particular has a mandate to work for reconciliation,” he said Monday.

The report suggests that a “truth and reconciliation” meeting between Christian and Muslim leaders would be an opportunity to apologize for the way the West has contributed to the tragedy in Iraq, including the March 2003 invasion led by the United States and Britain."

Next up, an apology to Germany for the unpleasantness of 1944-45? :o

The "liberal" media is a conspiracy theory that only right wingers believe in when they are facing harsh cristicism for their stupid actions. There is no such thing as a "liberal" media. It's a tin foil hat theory. Are you a tin foil theorist Boon Me ?  :o

I tend to think the mainstream media are money whores. They will report what gives them the highest ratings. But then along comes an event like Tony Blair basically saying Kyoto is finished and he will not spend anymore time trying to build upon Kyoto and no one reports it. Why? Blair's speech was at Bill Clinton's Global Initiative summit which cost $15,000 a seat to attend. I'd say it was news that would achieve high ratings but there was nothing said about it. What about the Euro press they don't cover the GB PM?

http://www.techcentralstation.com/091505JP.html

Read how the Washington Post reporter treats Clinton in his news report with no mention of what the PM of Britian had to say about Kyoto. Basically the reporter portrays Clinton as bold while everyone else is meek.

Good example, Augie.

Saw this one today where The New York Times continues to shill for Mother Sheehan, who’s now in New York calling out Senator Hillary Clinton: Mother Who Lost Son in Iraq Continues Fight Against War

Cindy Sheehan, the mother of an American soldier killed in Iraq, last night brought her campaign to end the war to New York, where she accused Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of not doing enough to challenge the Bush administration’s Iraq policies.

Speaking in front of more than 500 supporters in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, Ms. Sheehan, speaking of Senator Clinton, said, “She knows that the war is a lie but she is waiting for the right time to say it.” Then, as the crowd cheered, she issued a challenge to Senator Clinton, saying, “You say it or you are losing your job.”

The New York Times has not reported Sheehan’s statement about pulling troops out of “occupied New Orleans,” because it makes her look deranged (which she is), and doesn’t help the Times’ anti-war cause. :D

Yes, they are are money whores and that means they will do anything possible to not upset those "conservatives" sponsors. Are you familiar with ClearChannel ?

Every newspaper has a political bias but to think that there is a conspiracy of a "liberal" media is totally nuts. Journalists just sometimes get inspired and worked up on a story and they follow it. This is how scandals get played. Most media reporters are afraid of the big Rove/Bush Spin Machine and therefore will "auto-censor" to avoid trouble. However in the last few weeks, it seems that all gloves are off for the president. About time.

In other news, there are rumors that Bush had a fall out with Cheney. It seems that the VP is tired to babysit and fix things for every Bush fukup :o

Well, somehow we are blessed that GW Bush is, well, GW Bush, that is a failed businessman and a failed politician who is probably the greatest danger to himself. How long before he alienates everyone in his administration, including the VP. By the way, rumors are that they had a fallout over the Hurricaine "incident" after Cheney voiced his frustrations about GW Bush long vacations. See how "silent" the VP has been during the Hurricaine mess and ever since.

That said, Bush has revealed the weakness of a system. Maybe he was just a test run for an other "evil" candidate that the NeoCons have in their box. How long before the US falls into a full dictartorship with the crowd and the like of Spee and Boon Me cheering at the top. It has to happen. Every mature nations has to go through one. Bush won't be the last to try. He failed because he wasn't political smart, but someone with political wits could have made a killing. The system has revealed that the president can get away with anything as long as it's not a blow job.

Maybe an IQ test, a new election system, new election devices and no electronic votes, and a ban on family members could be a start.

In the terrible aftermath of Hurricane KKKatrina, the nation watched with renewed horror - if not a certain sense of schadenfreude - as Hurricane Ophelia bore down on the white republican stronghold of Florida. Then she suddenly veered away, no doubt after a late night phone call from Brother Jeb to Brother Shrub, and made a beeline for North Carolina and its 1.5 million Blacks. Now, Bush's latest hurricane is targeting the Florida Keys, specifically Key West, admired for its vibrant gay community and vociferous opposition to George Bush.

Bush's infamous intolerance for diversity is about to claim its next round of victims. Even as New Orleans slowly recovers, Bush's "cleansing" of the Keys has already begun. The doors and windows on hundreds of gay discos have been boarded up. Thousands of frightened citizens have already pranced to higher ground, with thousands more certain to flounce, flit, or sashay away in the coming hours. Once the storm has passed and the giant cloud of purple feathers and dimpled chads has settled, Bush will be free to build his own Gulag Archipelago - a string of miniature Guantanamos where Muslim same-sex couples and flamboyantly gay freedom fighters will be held without due process.

Halliburton is probably drawing up the blueprints as I type... :o

UK Soldiers Caught

Dressed As Iraqis

Killing Local Police

From David Cohen - Australia

9-20-5

Jeff - The BBC reported somthing VERY vague about an attack on the Basra jail but it caught my attention, so I switched to the Australian TV channels to find more info:

The reports stated two British commando special forces dressed as Iraqis have been cought by the Iraqis after they were found shooting and killing local policemen. And the Iraqis put them in jail.

The British army then, came with tanks, destroyed the jail and freed the two british commandos. In the process, all the Iraqi prisoners in the jail ran away to freedom.

Riots started, and I saw British tanks engulfed with molotov coktails and British soldiers runing out of thier tanks, some were on fire.

This report give crediblity to the 'conspiracy theorists' who have long claimed many terrorist acts in Iraq are, in fact, being initiated and carried out by US, British and Israeli forces.

The TRUTH is the British had to either rescue or kill these two commandos in order to keep these operations secret. Fortunately for the two Brits, they were saved.

The British Commander of the forces involved gave such idiotic excuses I won't even bother to report them to you. The followng just moved on the net...

Iraqi Prison Stormed By British Tanks And Helicopters

British forces in tanks and helicopters stormed an Iraqi jail tonight to rescue two service personnel who were arrested after allegedly shooting dead a local policeman and wounding another, the governor of Basra said.

The two men had been taken to the Basra jail after violence erupted earlier today in the southern Iraqi city.

Photographs of the two - thought to be special forces officers - were taken and released to the media, showing them bandaged and bloody.

British troops had arrived at the police station where the two men were being held and encircled the building.

They were attacked by demonstrators with rocks and petrol bombs.

One soldier was seen engulfed by flames tumbling from his tank and gunfire was exchanged between the two sides, leaving three soldiers injured and two civilians dead.

Later, more than 10 tanks and helicopters broke down the walls of the jail in the rescue operation to release the two arrested servicemen.

It was also reported that 150 Iraqi prisoners escaped in what Mohammed al-Waili, the governor of Basra, described as a 'barbaric, savage and irresponsible' act.

The MoD refused to comment after officials said that the two men were undercover officers dressed as Arabs.

The spokesman said: "We can confirm that the two military personnel have been released."

Mr al-Waili said: "A British force of more than 10 tanks backed by helicopters attacked the central jail and destroyed it. This is an irresponsible act."

He said the British force had spirited the prisoners away to an unknown location.

UK soldiers 'freed from militia'

Two British soldiers freed after tanks broke into a Basra prison were being held by Shia militiamen, the Ministry of Defence said.

The MoD said the men had been found at a nearby house after troops broke into the city's prison to look for them.

Basra governor Mohammed al-Waili called the Army action a "barbaric act of aggression".

The arrests sparked unrest in which UK tanks came under attack. Reports said two Iraqi civilians were killed.

The two men - thought to be British servicemen working undercover - were accused of opening fire on local police.

Bush Drinks Blood From Hurricane Victim's Skull

After months of hiding out in Crawford, Bush will tour the Gulf Coast tomorrow to witness first hand the wholesale destruction his corrupt environmental policies have wrought. A slew of loyal lapdog reporters will accompany him, willing participants in a carefully choreographed photo-op scripted by Karl Rove. But will the cameras be on as he cashes the check for all the war profits he's made as working families struggle to keep their heads above water? Will they capture the look of orgasmic joy on his face as he surveys the piles of dead Democrat voters? Will the microphones record the screams - the horrible screams - as Bush rips the head off a hurricane victim with his bare hands and drinks the blood from his skull?

Of course not. The media will show us exactly what Rove wants us to see: Bush hugging paid shills with phony compassion. Bush filling sandbags with the little people. Bush distributing care packages to hungry children. He'll come off looking "presidential", and the brainwashed brownshirts of the blogosphere will eat it up. There will be no Cindy Sheehans to ask him why he wiped out New Orleans and killed so many black people. There will be no congressional inquiries by Katrina Widows for Hillary to demand answers. The water will recede, everyone will go back to drinking Bush's kool-aid, and the wealthiest 1% of Americans will continue to enjoy their tax cuts as if nothing had ever happened.

For the love of Gaia, people! We must not allow right-wing pundits to politicize this tragedy by refusing to hold Bush accountable for it! :o

I am ready to believe you Boon Me but as usual you forgot to provide a credible link :o

How long before the US falls into a full dictartorship

Before a dictator can take the reins our rights must be erroded further. There must be a stronger federal govenment so power is legally concentrated in fewer hands. What is needed is more incompetents like the mayor and governor of Louisiana to fk up so bad that there is a call from the left to empower the federal govenment to act where normaly competent state and local officials have no problems. I shudder to think greed and corruption in the backwater state of Louisiana during the post katrina restoration will spur new federal laws diminishing state's rights. We shall see if the amount of thieving of federal funds leads to congressional legislation allowing the federal governemt to directly control and spend money on state and local projects nationwide. They had better have the FBI watching those Louisiana political bosses.

Chinese rubber company begins marketing condoms with Clinton, Lewinsky brand names.

BEIJING -- A rubber company in China has begun marketing condoms under the brand names Clinton and Lewinsky, apparently seeking to exploit the White House affair that led to the impeachment of America's 42nd president.

Spokesman Liu Wenhua of the Guangzhou Rubber Group said the company was handing out 100,000 free Clinton and Lewinsky condoms as part of a promotion to raise consumer awareness of its new products.

He said that after the promotion ends, the Clinton condoms will go on sale in southern China for 29.8 Yuan (US$3.72) for a box of 12, while the Lewinsky model will be priced at 18.8 Yuan (US$2.35) for the same quantity.

"The Clinton condom will be the top of our line," he said. "The Lewinsky condom is not quite as good."

Wonder if they are for sale in Thailand?

Probably be a BIG hit! :o

MASSIVE NEWSPAPER LAYOFFS

Left-Leaning Media Can’t Compete in Free Market

They’re calling it "Black Tuesday." Four major US newspapers announced today that they are cutting some 600 jobs, reports the trade journal Editor & Publisher. Today’s layoffs continue a pattern of long-term decline among left-leaning mass media, whose efforts to compete in the age of Fox News, talk radio and the Internet have met only dismal failure.

The New York Times Company announced today that it is cutting 500 jobs, including 45 newsroom positions at its flagship paper The New York Times and 35 at its subsidiary The Boston Globe.

Philadelphia Newspapers, Inc., which owns the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News, announced this morning that it would cut 100 jobs.

Meanwhile, The New York Times web site has begun charging readers for some content, such as Op-Ed pieces, in a new pay-to-read program called TimesSelect.

Oprah's Struggle

The current cover of Newsweek bears the heartbreaking image of a crying African American child, with the chilling header "A Nation's Enduring Shame". Not "pride" in the national outpouring of generosity and compassion that came all too slowly in Katrina's wake, but SHAME for the thousands of blacks who were left to drown while even the poorest whites were chaffeured out of town in stretch limos stocked with beluga caviar and Dom Perignon.

Known and admired for its rich history of tolerance and inclusion, France is suddenly wallowing in the unshaven armpit of shame itself, for Oprah Winfrey was denied entrance to a posh Paris boutique purely on account of her race. Thousands visit the Hermes stores every year. One would think that if the store had a policy of excluding blacks, someone would have complained about it by now. But the deafening silence of African-Parisians over their exclusion from Mermes only underscores the pervasive climate of fear that white Europeans have used to intimidate minorities for generations. It's the same sort of fear that keeps blacks from the polls every election. It's the very same gut-wrenching terror that paralyzed New Orleans' Mayor Nagin when our white peeResident demanded he "EVACUATE THE CITY! EVACUATE THE CITY! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, EVACUATE THE CITY!"

Mayor Nagin must have heard the ancient rattle of chains and crack of the overseer’s whip in that thick Texas drawl. Certainly, Oprah heard them when she was brusquely turned away from Hermes like some average slob. But to Hermes' chagrin, Oprah would not go down without a fight. On the premiere of her syndicated TV talk show, she implored her loyal legion of angry, obese housewives to refrain from buying any $350 silk scarves or $750 purses from the racist boutique until justice was served. Hermes balked at first, claiming that the store was in the process of closing when Oprah arrived. But certainly Phil Donahue or Maury Povich would have been given preferential treatment in the exact same set of circumstances. After the enormous girth of Oprah’s celebrity power bore down on them, Hermes officials issued an apology, and assured Oprah that had they known who she was, they would have had a team of eunuchs carry her around the store like the Queen of Sheba.

*snap snap* You go grrrrrrrrrl!!!

After all, isn’t that what any of us want? Isn’t that what any of us deserve? Because of Oprah’s terrifying experience, she can now sympathize with the millions of lesser blacks who have suffered through generations of racial injustice in a system created by whites for that express purpose. And while her one small victory is a triumph for multi-millionaire TV divas everywhere, it is up to progressives such as ourselves to exploit the Katrina tragedy by demanding an immediate end to Bush’s tax cuts. Only after we’ve completely milked it dry for our own political benefit, can America finally be cleansed of its “enduring national shame".

Gimme a break... :o

Personally, I doubt this will make any difference to the liberals who can only complain and point blame about everything on the planet. They'll point out the fact people haven't been stacked sideways on the roof as proof of a "failed plan"... :o

Bored on the BearPit, Boon Me :o

No liberals lefts over there to engage you in your "pointless" debates ? :D

I think the New Orleans disaster was a combination of lack of foresight from the governor, lack of initial attention from the media, and criminally incompetent behavior from FEMA. The Texas storm seems to have been handled better, but needed less (and the New Orleans horse was already out of the barn, so they didn't want to go through that one again). Does that make me a liberal or not? Enquiring minds wanna know.

Armed and dangerous - Flipper the firing dolphin let loose by Katrina

by Mark Townsend Houston

Sunday September 25, 2005

The Observer

It may be the oddest tale to emerge from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Armed dolphins, trained by the US military to shoot terrorists and pinpoint spies underwater, may be missing in the Gulf of Mexico.

Experts who have studied the US navy's cetacean training exercises claim the 36 mammals could be carrying 'toxic dart' guns. Divers and surfers risk attack, they claim, from a species considered to be among the planet's smartest. The US navy admits it has been training dolphins for military purposes, but has refused to confirm that any are missing.

Dolphins have been trained in attack-and-kill missions since the Cold War. The US Atlantic bottlenose dolphins have apparently been taught to shoot terrorists attacking military vessels. Their coastal compound was breached during the storm, sweeping them out to sea. But those who have studied the controversial use of dolphins in the US defence programme claim it is vital they are caught quickly.

Leo Sheridan, 72, a respected accident investigator who has worked for government and industry, said he had received intelligence from sources close to the US government's marine fisheries service confirming dolphins had escaped.

'My concern is that they have learnt to shoot at divers in wetsuits who have simulated terrorists in exercises. If divers or windsurfers are mistaken for a spy or suicide bomber and if equipped with special harnesses carrying toxic darts, they could fire,' he said. 'The darts are designed to put the target to sleep so they can be interrogated later, but what happens if the victim is not found for hours?'

Usually dolphins were controlled via signals transmitted through a neck harness. 'The question is, were these dolphins made secure before Katrina struck?' said Sheridan.

The mystery surfaced when a separate group of dolphins was washed from a commercial oceanarium on the Mississippi coast during Katrina. Eight were found with the navy's help, but the dolphins were not returned until US navy scientists had examined them.

Sheridan is convinced the scientists were keen to ensure the dolphins were not the navy's, understood to be kept in training ponds in a sound in Louisiana, close to Lake Pontchartrain, whose waters devastated New Orleans.

The navy launched the classified Cetacean Intelligence Mission in San Diego in 1989, where dolphins, fitted with harnesses and small electrodes planted under their skin, were taught to patrol and protect Trident submarines in harbour and stationary warships at sea.

Criticism from animal rights groups ensured the use of dolphins became more secretive. But the project gained impetus after the Yemen terror attack on the USS Cole in 2000. Dolphins have also been used to detect mines near an Iraqi port.

Bush plea for cash to rebuild Iraq raises $600

http://observer.guardian.co.uk/internation...1577750,00.html

:o

An extraordinary appeal to Americans from the Bush administration for money to help pay for the reconstruction of Iraq has raised only $600 (£337), The Observer has learnt. Yet since the appeal was launched earlier this month, donations to rebuild New Orleans have attracted hundreds of millions of dollars.

The public's reluctance to contribute much more than the cost of two iPods to the administration's attempt to offer citizens 'a further stake in building a free and prosperous Iraq' has been seized on by critics as evidence of growing ambivalence over that country.
