Yellow String

2 years and 3 months ago whilst in Penang Malaysia I was given a yellow string by a Buddist Monk at their temple. Normally how long do I keep it on for. I was told it can stay there and when it drops off - do not pick it up  - is 2 years and 3 months some kind of a record?
