No problem if Thaksin returns, PM says

By THE NATION ON SUNDAY, AGENCIES

The prime minister yesterday shrugged off fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra's claim he planned to return to Thailand later this year.

BANGKOK: -- Abhisit Vejjajiva said the government would not stop Thaksin from entering the country, but, as a fugitive, the former leader must first come under the judicial process.

"There is no problem. He is not prohibited from entering the country. After his entry, he will have to come under Thai law," the PM said.

In 2008, the Supreme Court sentenced Thaksin - who had fled overseas in self-imposed exile - to two years' jail for a conflict of interest over a land scandal involving his ex-wife while he was in power. Thaksin has claimed that the verdict was politically motivated.

On Friday, Thaksin phoned in to a Pheu Thai Party meeting and predicted he would be back in Thailand by the end of this year. It was his first public call to the party - widely regarded as his proxy - since the Army dispersed an anti-government demonstration in central Bangkok on May 19.

Thaksin, who has had an increasingly tough time finding refuge after being accused of terrorism in connection with the recent unrest, said he was calling from an undisclosed African country.

Meanwhile, the prime minister defended spending by the Centre for Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) to maintain law and order in the capital and provinces where red-shirt groups have been active.

Abhisit said he was assured by Army chief General Anupong Paochinda that budget spending by the CRES followed standard procedures while military and police assigned to the southern provinces and in Bangkok received equal allowances.

There was no complication, he said, but if irregularities in disbursements were found, an investigation would be ordered.

The prime minister said he had asked Anupong about the issue as the general had earlier explained details of military affairs to the Lower House of Parliament.

MP Somchai Paetprasert, from the opposition Pheu Thai Party, who is chairman of the House Committee on Military Affairs, had earlier noted that the CRES spent over Bt1 billion, which was higher than the budget set by the government for military operations in the deep South.

I would think that with enough baksheesh he could arrange for a house arrest like Aung San Suu Kyi, get himself a place in the country etc. Then again he could get the Sen Dang treatment.

In the case of another, earlier SE Asian dictator I recall Imelda Marcos mentioning that being exiled from the Philippines so disturbed her beloved Ferdinand that it hastened his subsequent death in Hawaii.

It was the hardest part of their existence and the millions they similarly looted from their home country didn't seem to compensate for their missing home.

Don't know where to fit this in, just curious;

Is Abhisit a British Citizen? no great political importance, though it would be in other countries, like America, for one.

His Govt is going to make expats give up their home nationalities, maybe Britain, Germany, Canada, Sweden, America, should copy this 'wise' move for all of the Thai expats

Where do you get this information from, and what do you mean? Expat Thais have to give up their nationality, or expats in Thailand have to give up their nationality?

And why would foreign governments want to change their immigration/nationality laws simply because Thailand get a bee in its bonnet?

No money and live in Thailand.........or loads of money and live elsewhere.......I think the first option is not 'POSSIBLY' but obviously the worst option even 'if its where you come from'.........try it sometime just for a month and let me know how you get on?.........................however if you can return and maybe swing things your way a little, different story.

Abhisit is a Thai citizen, born in the U.K. of Thai parents. Thus, since he was educated at the finest schools in England, he speaks perfect English and thinks like a westerner. Some less well informed posters have made comments that since he was born there he should go back there, which is rather absurd when you think about it..

Not sure what your comments about making expats give up their 'home nationalities" is all about?

In the latest news it was quoted that farangs may be able to get thai citizenship if they give up any dual nationality meaning you could become a thai citizen but only of you give up your birth citizenship and hold thai only

Any idiot that does that is exactly that an idiot.

Have to take your word that he's thinking, but I'm sure he can sing all the Thai songs. It would appear that he is being coached, probably from an American perspective, since he has reduced his incessant blinking down to only 80-100 times per minute, his choice of ties and suits has improved, he has been keeping his hair better-styled, and he has moved to standing presidentially at a podium flanked by flags and an official seal instead of sitting wherever at empty tables when addressing the nation.

"The elite rich minority", just rolls off the tongue doesn't it? Most prominent politicians of today and the past came from relatively wealthy families. Two such great people , Gandhi and Aung San suu Kyi, came from wealthy, influential families.

Just because Abhisit comes from "the elite rich minority" is rather irrelevant, since Thaksin himself originates from similar background. Abhisit has the educational wherewithal to guide Thailand through the coming difficult times. Thaksin has already shown his true colors and they are not pretty.

If you think the average Somchai from Nakhon Nowhere can don a suit and tie and represent the people of Thailand on the world stage effectively without education and an understanding of how the real world works outside the village then you truly are a dreamer. Jatuporn Prompan is a case in point.

Thaksin always needed to keep the poor in their place while pretending to be their guardian angel. The fox in charge of the chickens situation.
