Electrician Trying To Relocate

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am a English electrician from the oil & gas industry. I have compex and IRATA L1 rope access certificates as well. I am trying to find work and relocate to south east Asia. I am interested in any information upon the industry out there, ie. do they hire farangs, what companies to approach, etc. Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Hi Gengusthethird,

there are poor chances to get a job as an electrican, because the Thais have good skilled locals covering this job. Apart from this it is very hard to work as a falang under a Thai management and your workmates will not respect you, because you are only a falang. You have to be very specialised to cover a job field which Thais cannot do. The best opportunity is to get a contract from an international company which put you on a job in Thailand, but theese jobs are much sought-after. I know some engineers who succeed to get a job here, but they are all not very happy about their situation and the income does not cross the 2000$ line (as engineers!!)

Try to create your income outside Thailand and live here.

Good luck for the future :jap:

Working in O&G in SEA and specifically Thailand, allow me to correct some of the statements made above:

1. If your sights are set on offshore Thailand as a sparky, forget it, however, there are companies that do use Expat IRATA RA personnel in Thailand, mainly for inspection

2. Working offshore O&G under Thai management is no harder or easier than anywhere else in the world I have worked and in fact in a lot of cases its actually easier, the above statement is absolute BS.

3. "Income does not cross $2000, as engineers"...... :cheesy: .......There maybe some validity this statement if you are talking about the day rate....$2k/day would be around the upper end, but asumming you are talking about a month, in all my years here, never met anyone in the game on less than $6k/m to the upper end of around $30k/m tax free

If you want to persue Rope Access, look at companies based in Singapore and apply there, I dont think you would have much of chance with RA companies in Thailand, simply because the expat positions are already tied up and people are only replaced when someone kicks the bucket...:D ...if you understand what mean.

On the electrial, Drilling companies are good option, but you will not get a choice where you go, If you request Thailand, be assured you will not get it...;)

In summary in my opinion you would be better with the Rope Access, but go and do some inspection courses, if you had an IRATA III, you would get a job pretty easy

hope this helps

What's wrong? All you mention above is based on foreign companies. I did, and I still do jobs in Thailand, but I'm working for an international company. The moment you are working directly for a Thai company, as an employee of the Thai company, your income will be on Thai level. What,s wrong with this?

I'm sorry that I don't have your experience, ....that's the reason why I write about my experience......

My first couple of years here WAS working for direct for a Thai company, and still disagree with your statement, my income was comperable with other places I had worked, not a "Thai level"....or I wouldnt have took the job...LOL
