Carrefour Closing Down? Is This True?

I read Carrefour withdraws from Thailand and thus our Carrefour here in Pattaya is going to close. To me this would be a disaster... Is it true?! When?

Pattaya will survive with or without carrefour. I lived in Pattaya for many years without a carrefour.

I hardly ever go there, so I won't miss it, but I guess it was always nice to know it was there as an alternative to the places closer to where I live. I hope Tesco doesn't buy it though, as we don't need another Tesco Lotus megastore in Pattaya. Same goes for Big C.

how about Costco? I actually like their stores and recently visited one in Taipei. Very good prices but must buy in bulk.

Doubtful, Central Group is already heavily extended and has scaled back its new store opening and its new hotels business.

I hope that's right... The last thing Thailand retail needs is another chain/sector to be taken over by Central.... I guess for some folks, too much is just never enough...

This brings up the more general question of whether Pattaya is "over-stored." I, for one, would miss the CF somewhat, if for nothing else, they have a pretty decent selection of fresh baked breads. The other big-box stores, Big C, Tesco, and Mackro don't have this. If I had my choice, Central/Tops would be my choice...I don't wish to see any American retailer in the space.

I don't see Tesco buying CF if for no other reason, there is lots of over-lap in their market coverage, with many stores being in the immediate vidinity of each other.

Too much red tape to function here I'd say, it's about time the hais realised that outside investment is good and they should start to make it easier, I'm sure if you looked into this in detail you would find a Thai owner making it impossible to do business here through rent charges or whatever, sound familiar to all you past and present owners.

Overlap in the market - means nothing here, just look at the PTT Takeover of Conoco/Phillips/ Jet/Jiffy, drive on any road here, not just Pattaya but throughout Thailand you will see so many PTT stations slap bang next door to each other!! It will be Tesco., guaranteed!

I used to go to villa but it's expensive, CF is kinda far from me....what are some other supermarket that's decent and not too expensive?

I would love to see Wal Mart buy them. They keep their stores clean and well organized and seem to keep their prices down with the help of cheap chinese goods. It would also bring a major competitor in the thai market to keep Tesco, Big C, and the other chains prices in check. But it doubtful because of Thailands political situation. Their already freaking out with their Wal Mex stores in Mexico and watching that country go to hel_l

A Disco Supermarket would be fun. That's an Argentinian grocery chain where they play really loud disco music to shop by; I think it's meant to be a cruising/pickup spot. A Walmart or new Tesco/Big C is about as exciting as a wet noodle.

But they're also quitting Singapore and Malaysia, leaving Asia completely hence it doesn't seem to me that corruption in Thailand is the issue.

I will miss Carrefour. I am also a bit miffed - as I recently bought some electrical goods, one with a 2 year warranty - so what happens to these warranties. I had to return another electrical item to them under warranty just 3 weeks ago, so these warranties are quite useful.

thats great i bought new phone from tesco. took it back after a week and they told me to go to Nokia repair shop, who charged me 1800 baht. shame if Carrefour go they are way ahead of the competition, tesco are the dreggs of the shopping world in Thailand.
