Carrefour Closing Down? Is This True?

Too much red tape to function here I'd say, it's about time the hais realised that outside investment is good and they should start to make it easier, I'm sure if you looked into this in detail you would find a Thai owner making it impossible to do business here through rent charges or whatever, sound familiar to all you past and present owners.

This doesnt seem to have stopped Tesco from becoming Thailands largest retailer...

doesn't mean they are making loads of anything, I'd love to see the cash flow/balance sheet, I'd say it's pretty tight, in fact I've been in the store several times recently and customers are few, maybe tesco will be next to go

It's just a store. Really, even if they just leave a big old hole in that space, is it going to have a serious impact on anyone's life here? Exceptions may be if you or a loved one works at Carrefour.

IMHO if it came down to TL and Big C I would vote for Big C.

I am not sure that Carrefour would like to sell it to Big C, as Big C is part of the Casino Group ("Géant"), the other big French super & hyper-markets group and Carrefour's biggest competitor...

French, what do you expect?:cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy:

Could you please develop your point ?

This brings up the more general question of whether Pattaya is "over-stored."

It's not a Pattaya problem. Carrefour think about quiting Thailand. French sources talk about "a level of corruption not acceptable any more"...

Perhaps it's a French thing, who knows.

Wal-Mart is coming.:whistling:

I really really hope its not Walmart, I get pictures sent to me from friends of Walmart shoppers.

That's outstanding, and a touch outrageous also!

do they look any different from the average carrefour shopper?

No worries. The typical American Walmart shopper doesn't even have a passport, and never will have one. Next ...

How dare you, I shop there all the time and I would never wear pink on pink.

Hey, JimSiam, in case you are mocking Walmart shoppers, what's up with your avatar pic?

Hopefully they'll keep those two bald dorks (there's a farang one and a Thai one) that run their crew like it's the military (I think their uniforms even have shoulder boards and stars) yelling 'dramatically' so customers can see that they're keeping their ship 'in order.'

Doesn't explain why they are quitting all of SE Asia, including Indo, Singapore, and Malaysia as well.

They're looking to sell all their stores in Thailand and in the region, asking between USD 800 mill and USD 1 bill., industry watchers reckon that Tesco may buy them but not at that price.

Tesco are due to quit shortly also so very unlikely

I shop at Walmart, I am American and I have a passport too.

So you are wrong and owe me an apology.

Does every thread here have to somehow offer an excuse to bash America? And forget it if you defend America or say anything that might be offensive about the UK, the big bad M's tell you that your being a bad boy.

There is a reason Walmart is the largest and most successful retail chain in the history of the world. They are better than all the rest.

And Tesco sucks by the way, they are supposed to be a low cost store, which they are not. You can get almost everything they sell for the same prices at B-C or Care4. There selection is very poor when it comes to foreign goods. And the beef they sell, well you would be better off buying caned dog-food than whatever they try to push off as beef.

I hope Care4 does not leave by the way; it is my favorite large store. They have great bread and good BBQ ribs too.

I said typical. I didn't say all. I stand by my assertion. If you are trying to start a fight or seriously think I should apologize to you, you're barking up the wrong tree. Next ...

Because you said "Typical" means your remark was not offensive, is that what you are attempting to imply?

Answer this; just exactly what does Americans and passports have anything at all in common with a Care4 in Thailand closing? NONE is the answer!

If the two subjects are not even remotely associated exactly why did you think it was relevant to post a remark that you knew American members of this forum would at the very least be insulted by if you were not intending on that happening?

I have always had rather a problem with Carrefour in Pattaya. I drive into the car park and then when exiting I find I am in a totally different part of the town, and get completely lost. Not sure how that works...

Only if they quit the UK first!

Total rubbish.

OK... with that intelligent response you must know what you are talking about :D

Bacause the truth hurts...and it was completely true...and I'm an American...who can proudly state that he's never set foot in a Wal*Mart!

Given what is here (Carrefour, Big C, and Trashco Lotus), Walmart would be, in my opinion, an improvement, and it certainly couldn't be any worse. I would welcome their arrival even though I was not a Walmart shopper back in the US. I doubt that the "average shopper" at Trashco or Carrefour back in the UK or France, respectively, has a passport or looks much like the shoppers at the same stores here in Thailand -- so what? The same people that now shop in Carrefour, Big C and Trashco would be thrilled to shop at a Walmart if one was here in Pattaya. This isn't the US or France (or even the UK), and no one should try to gauge what is (or would be) here by what is available there... "same, same, but different".

Exactly. And here, the same people that now shop in Carrefour, Big C and Trashco, and would at Walmart if it were here, don't have passports either.

So the point made earlier is? Just some usual silliness, eh?

Very impressive. Buying your clothes at the Woolworths in West Virginia probably got you lots of hillbilly girls. :P

Oh, 'cause the long walk to the store from the parking lot would be too strenuous . . . . No reason for pride there.

Me, I shop at Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, AND at WalMart, among other stores, when I'm back in the States. I don't see any problem.

Be great if Thailand had WalMart. Soon we'll have an Ikea anyway.
