NoshowJones
What else do I listen to (when I'm not studying the thai language) except KISS!! Here is a song which, when it was released, was panned by the critics in the US. I guess it was too disco at that time! But when it is played 'live', it still ROCKZ!! It's called; "I Was Made 4 Luvin' U" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ne9YwwchmNI&feature=related Enjoy (or NOT). As the thais here say "Up-2-U"!! Now anyway you measure it, that was a frickin' LONG wire-fly over the crowd. .. Show me ONE band that does a show like KISS and I'll switch bands tomorrow!! BUT no band in the entire world does a show like they do.... Deal with it, or take it to your grave! I'll show you a band that has better musicians and vocalists. The Byrds. Jip99
Another. As an ex professional musician myself mostly playing American country music, I would say yes, they are a good band. But as far as musical ability and vocals are concerned, the best ever band was The Byrds, all the best bands and singers are, or were Americans, look at Elvis and Roy Orbison. You will never get anything like those two again. I guess an American might think that is the case

Never heard of Axel Rose. Prince? I have heard of him, but could not name any of his records. I do not know the female singer you are referring to, but for versatility, I would rate Jo Stafford. I can only name one song by FM. How many records could you name by Elvis or Roy Orbison? Quite a lot I would bet. I do know for a fact that both Elvis and Roy were very capable of singing opera. I would be interested to find out if any of the people you mentioned are/were capable of that. I don't suppose you have heard Elvis singing Santa Lucia? I've got to say I am enjoying this debate. Yes, I'm enjoying this one too, much better than most of the non-debates in other fora. Did you click on the link in post #2318, That is Freddie in a duet with Montserrat_Caball a very famous opera singer. Axel Rose, not surprised at that, Guns & Roses aren't everyone's cup of tea. You are dead right about me being able to name absolutely oodles of songs by Elvis and The Big O. I was born in the very early 60's, my parents were both in their forties and I had two sisters who were 12 and 11 years older than me. By the time I became aware of music other than nursery rhymes and the theme from Batman, the content was a mix of Glenn Miller, Perry Como, Nat King Cole, Patsy Cline etc and Jimi Hendrix, Family, Joe Cocker, Beatles, Stones etc....... it was a heck of a ride, middle aged parents and hippy sisters. I started buying records for myself in the mid 70's, and in the 80's started gigging in bands (I'm a keyboard player) The 80's is my personal favourite period and it did stretch a fair way into the 90's .... the number of influential bands started to taper off at the turn of the Century, but they are still there. Oh, and I have been a Radio DJ for quite a number of years, playing popular music from Aaron Neville to ZZ Top and all points between, so yeah, I can name a few tunes. Music has been a major feature for my entire life, but I still wouldn't like to single out who I think is the best singer of all time. Anyway, sticking to the thread title, what am I listening to now? XTC http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1sVWAzLP9I
Jip99
I think music/songs is far too subjective to meaningfully debate. I hated Elvis. Until after his death. That was when I started to listen to more of his songs. Hyped up something rotten but a good voice and. more importantly, a huge impact in 'popular' music. I don't listen to a song, or a singer, for it's/their technical brilliance. I get my enjoyment from being entertained and that degree of enjoyment can be influenced by any number of factors. Please don't tell me Blue Suede Shoes is better than Je'taime moi non plus when you are banging away with the current girl of your dreams - I won't buy it. Anyway, these were one of the tightest bands I saw in the 80's

XTC http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1sVWAzLP9I Yes, not only Freddie Mercury sang Opera parts in a duet with Montserrat Caballé, but also within his band (Queen), some songs were of the operatic rock genre, such as "Bohemian Rhapsody", for instance. Freddie Mercury is considered by many as the best singer of all time. I also appreciate the voices of Eric Burdon (of The Animals), Stievie Wonder, Matt Bellamy (of Muse), Tina Turner... amongst many others, including Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison, of course!

Thaddeus
There are few cover versions that I prefer to the original artist. This is one (and The Who's version is great). That's good, really good, like yourself, cover versions are something I usually shy away from, at least they had the decency to leave Moonies drum solo out of it. And like our Pats, there have been some great Scottish bands that are right up there.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suzwkw0dYmM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOgCjTXVnWk It's a big country, but worth remembering that there are some countries outside Scotland. Like Ireland http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0edY2zMNB0 Music is music, it refuses to be labelled, nationality is immaterial, race is immaterial, creed is immaterial and colour is immaterial.
