Bomb Found Near School In Chiang Mai 9Am Today

Featured Replies

Fail to see how a bomb near a school could only be described as "intended to merely cause disruption." Perhaps further details will emerge indicating the bomb was a "dud" or "powerless" ? We don't know if the school (in Pa Tong, but un-named in the story) was in session now or not.

In Chiang Mai at around 9 am, a bomb was found planted at a bus stop in front of a school in Chiang Mai's Pa Tong district, before it was disposed of by a bombs disposal robot.

The bomb, contained in a potato ship can with its detonator powered by a pair of batteries, was active and ready to go off if detonated, said police ordnance personnel.

Police said the incident was intended to merely cause disruption, but did not comment about who could be behind it.

Responding to the Chiang Mai bomb scare, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said he was considering lifting the state of emergency in Chiang Mai, wihch is a stronghold of antigovernment red shirts, and other touristfrequented provinces anyway in the next week regardless of the incident.

'Chiang Mai is one the provinces being put under consideration over revocation of the emergency state, as the business sector are complaning about effects on tourism,' he added.

The Thai media has a way of understating the obvious.

I am sure it would be a little more than "merely disruptive" to the people who might have sat near the bomb.

The photo in the Nation of all the BIB standing in the "crime scene" peering down at where the bomb was planted brought back memories of when a bomb went off a couple of years ago near the Victory monument on New Years eve and the BMA came along and scrubed the sidewalk clean washing away all the evidence. Maybe some of Takkies money could be used to teach some basic investigation skills so the BIB might have a chance of finding out who is planting bombs regularly.

Nation reporting at its finest! "in a potato ship can"

And it should be Sanpatong district; that is where the bomb was found.

The bomb was found outside the school which is at the turnoff to Sanpatong Hospital. There is a police box nearby and maybe that was the target. Might have nothing at all to do with the political standoff.

I reckon it's a strong posibility it's nothing to do with politics. Back in the day when I lived in Sanpatong, the local kareoke joint in the village I stayed in was fire bombed by gangs of teenagers on motorbikes from another village a couple of times.

terrible reporting from the Nation though, shame

I am convinced that one of the finest journalism schools on our planet could be developed using The Nation as a model and example of sorts.
