Just to let everyone know and warn the wives, family and friends...

Yesterday my wife received a call from a girl stating that she was from Sasakorn bank (the green one). She said that she had got outstanding credit to the tune of 39,000B, and missed payments on a credit card and asked her if she'd go down to the ATM to verify this (she also asked for her credit card number) and for her to call her once there. She claimed she had my wife's name, address and details in-front of her (without actually stating them). The wife immediately saw the scam (she doesn't bank with the greens) and refused to give any info. The girl went on to say that if she wouldn't verify this she'd have to pass it onto the thai equivalent of the fraud squad - and tried to frighten her with the severity of this. My wife said no problem and ended the call. A couple of minutes later a guy calls, supposedly from the 'special unit', sounding all serious and asking for her details, card number and pin extra. The wife again refused and the guy rang off.

Now, days before a customer of my wife told her the exact same thing - it had happened to her father. An old guy apparently who happens to bank with the greens and was all set to go down there, mobile in hand. Luckily she intercepted him. The grape vine says that apparently these types of scams are currently targeting Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Lampang.

Just something to pass on. The number they called from was a 0088 number.

I just spoke to my girlfriend about this. She stated she rec'd a similar call. When my gf stated she had no cc, they did not let up and stated that someone had obviously used her ID - so....fork over the info!

She then stated she would go to the bank and clear it up - they were adamant that was not necessary.

I imagine this is a very successful scam. The people working this sound quite adept and agile.

I received an automatic message on my mobile stating that I owed over 10k on a landline.

Hit "9" for reply, it said. You bet, nothing like releasing a bit of stress!

So I asked them what number it was I owed them money on. All the time they are trying to get me to give them details. Nope, you got my mobile no. on file, you go check!

Eventually he rattled off a Bangkok tel. no. which was supposed to be my number. So I told him it was his unlucky day as I didn't have a BKK number. Then I told him he was a jerk. Then he put the phone down :o

I hadn't even finished my little tirade  .

Then I went to check that the telephone for my Bangkok condo was fully paid up

Just like I said. Can't trust the Chines/Taiwanese.

You mean you can't trust over-the-phone banking calls.

People from all over the world are in on credit card scams, not just Chinese and Taiwanese.

These are no worse than the emails asking you to verify your banking info, IMO.

Card skimming devices are another problem, whether it's waiters discreetly stealing credit card info, or devices secretly attached to ATMs. Both continue to exist in Thailand, and I highly doubt Chinese and Taiwanese people are responsible, thus they do not deserve this comment.

Tell Thai Visa and the Nation that.

Mrs Ricardo had a similar call last month, also purporting to be from Kasikorn Bank, who we do not use. They really ought to change the script from time to time !

Well, as a ThaiVisa member, I object to your racist comment Gotlost and I expect that to be true for most other members.

Thank what you like its OK with me. There is good and bad in every society but at the moment it looks as if the Taiwanese are the clear favorites in the telephone scam market in Thailand. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/389074-illegal-chinese-credit-card-call-center-shut-down-by-police-in-east-pattaya/page__p__3798945__hl__taiwanese+call+center__fromsearch__1#entry3798945
