No regrets, says Aussie in Thai jail

An Australian facing deportation from Thailand for his role in anti-government protests says he has no regrets despite being detained and allegedly bashed while in jail, adding he looks forward to being reunited with his family in Australia.

Conor (Conor) David Purcell, from Perth, has been held at the Immigration Detention Centre since a Thai judge found him guilty last week of breaching the state of emergency decree when he addressed anti-government protests this year. But Mr Purcell, in an interview with AAP, said he had no regrets over his role in the protests despite the subsequent arrest and trial. "No, definitely not (no regrets). They needed an English speaker to talk to the international media," he said from a cell in the detention centre.

Mr Purcell, who worked in Cambodia and Thailand as an English language teacher, said he still had nightmares and would seek medical treatment in Australia. He said he hopes to return to the region with plans to start up a charity foundation. But his first priority is to return home to Australia. Mr Purcell said he assumed he'd be going home next week and was making arrangements for a flight back to Perth.
