Does Thailand Have 'Wireless Broadband'?

Featured Replies

Does Thailand have wireless broadband ?

I don't mean those hotspot kind of WB. It's more like a USB modem where you can plug in and zoom....

Can anyone recommend a good one ?

Yes. CAT CDMA. Only works outside Bangkok, otherwise full recommendation.

Well, that's sort of 3G, hardly broadband. Normally wireless broadband is 4G which isn't available here and probably won't be in our lifetime.

Now, that is funny.

CAT CDMA (51 Provinces) lacks coverage in a bigger area than Bangkok. Central Thailand (25 Provinces) is supposed to be covered by Hutch, but I believe that it is no better than Edge. Hutch can only usually manage a 1xRTT service compared to CAT's EVDO revA.

CAT is supposed to be taking over Hutch's area this year and so EVDO should be available Nationwide.

The only sizable area hutch has the faster EV-DO coverage is the Pattaya area, and a fair bit around it.

But it seems the system is not really up to the heavy concentration of users in small area's, as found in the Pattaya/Jomtien area with all it's condominiums. Speed in the city is noticeable lower then in the surrounding, less densely populated area's such as Nong Pla lai, Mabprachan area etc...

Nope impossible as 4G does not exist yet as the standard is still not completed. Just marketing hype calling and branding evolutions of 3G based technologies as "4G".

There is some LTE networks being build in europe based on the proposed technologies for 4G standard. WiMax seems to be losing the race and present WiMax networks you can not call 4G. Usually slower than latest HSPA networks based on WCDMA.

But for the OP there is no real wireless broadband or data available in Thailand. CDMA networks have best coverage and some 3G WCDMA networks are running trials with limited coverage and on various frequencies. So nothing you are used to as "WB" in other countries.
