Have a look at these 100 year old photos of the Russian Empire.

Apparently taken with a specialized camera to capture three black and white images in fairly quick succession,

using red, green and blue filters, allowing them to later be recombined and projected with

filtered lanterns to show near true colour images.

I saw those on the Bedlam forum. Great photos and it was creative thinking to produce them. One thing I've noticed in old photos is there are never anybody smiling. Maybe life was just too harsh in those days for anyone to smile.

Actually, I posted the same topic on a couple of fishing forums and got a reasonable explanation why people didn't smile in the old photographs. It was probably because the photographer told everyone not to move. Because there wasn't the same shutter speed as modern cameras, the subjects had to remain still for a longer period of time.

Remember these were THREE images combined to produce the colour image.

Could you hold the same smile for 3 shots?

A glum look was probably easier.

Actually, yes. But I have the glum look down to an exact science.
