2010 Paris Motor Show

Recommended Posts

The Paris Motor Show is currently underway, and there's been a fair amount of unveiling going on.

Lotus

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Probably the biggest shock of the show has been Lotus, who have unveiled no less than 5 new models, so I'll start with them. All the new Lotus' unveiled are showing a radical change in styling language (somewhere between the Honda CR-Z the Toyota FT-86 with a dash of Lamborghini Gallardo and Ferrari 456 Italia) - so don't expect to recognize them as Lotus's on first sight :)

They're also re-launching some long-dead nameplates, and are quite obviously positioning their range to go head-to-head with Porsche.

Engines continue to be Toyota/Lexus sourced, as follows:

2.0L supercharged S4 with 320HP/330Nm in the new Elise. Optional start/stop. 8 Speed MT with optional DSG.

4.0L supercharged V6 with 450HP/465Nm in the new Elan. Optional Hybrid with 7-speed DSG.

5.0L supercharged V8 with 620HP/720Nm in the new Esprit, Elite and Eterne. Optional Hybrid with 7-speed DSG or a new "Hybrid Gearbox"

No details on what "Optional Hybrid" means just yet, nor exactly what the "Hybrid gearbox" in the Elite and Eterne means. Probably because Lotus themselves don't know yet ;)

On to the new models:

You're right; I didn't recognise the Elise....quite a departure from current model and I'm not sure I like the design.

Esprit on the other hand looks just right. Don't know if that's because I expect that model line to be supercar and the Elise to be a 'super-go-kart' though.

Range Rover Evoque

----------------------------------------------

For me, the most interesting car to come out of the show - I loved the LRX concept car, and it's great to see that the final version made it through almost completely intact. The Thai version will receive a 190HP 2.2L Diesel, mated to a 6-speed AT and is expected to arrive on our shores in mid-2011 with a price tag of around 4M Baht.

And the 5-door variant, which gets unveiled at the LA Motor show this November:

Lotus City Car Concept

----------------------------------------------------------------

As if unveiling 5 new sports/super cars wasn't enough, Lotus have just unveiled their new City Car Concept at the Paris Motor show.

This IQ-meets-new-Elise 4 seater uses a 72HP/240Nm electric motor as it's primary drivetrain, with a 1.2L 47HP flex-fuel engine to act as a generator when the Lithium-Ion batteries run out and there's no charging station handy (ala GM Volt/Ampere). 72HP not enough for Lotus you say? Well, their boffins have figured out a way to squeeze a peak of almost 220HP out of the electric motor for short periods of time ;)

Range on electric-only is 60KM, expanding to 500KM with the range extender engine burning fossil fuels - so enough to do the average daily commute in eery electric silence, but not restrained by lack of infrastructure. Great!

Specs:

Layout: 3 door, 4 seater, rear wheel drive

Drivetrain: Series hybrid drivetrain

Range Extender engine: 35 kW, 1.2 litre, 3 cylinder engine

Engine fuel: Flex-fuel (methanol, ethanol and petrol)

Battery Capacity: 14.8 kWh

Power/Torque: 162 kW peak (54 kW continuous)/ 240 Nm

0-50 km/h: 4.5 seconds

0-100 km/h: 9.0 seconds

Top speed: 170 km/h

Range: 500 km

EV range 60 km

CO2 emissions: 60 g/km on the ECE-R101 cycle

Weight: Less than 1,400 kg

Transmission: Single speed transmission

Audi Q30 Quattro Concept

--------------------------------------------------

Unfortunately not earmarked for actual production (though show buzz does have them thinking about a limited run), the Audi Q30 Quattro concept is a nod to the iconic 1984 car that lead Audi to dominate the Rally scene in that era.

Powered by a 400HP re-tuned version if Audi's TT RS 2.5L 5-pot, the Quattro Concept is said to be able to do 0-100 in 3.9 seconds, placing it awfully close to V10 R8 levels of performance.

Since Lotus is a Malaysian company, is it possible to buy an Elise in 2015 for the 35000 GBP price? (1.7m Baht) Do they fall under the ASEAN trade agreements?

If so, I expect to see a lot of those around.

You will see the Proton version if the Lotus City Car concept here in LOS at ASEAN FTA prices, but all of the other new Lotus models exceed the 220HP barrier, so attract an excise tax of 50% no matter where they're made.

Jaguar C-X75

------------------------------

Like it or not, electric is the future for all cars, and just to prove they don't all have to be boring little micro cars, Jaguar has unveiled their new C-X75 concept at the Paris Motor Show. While not intended for production, the buzz is this is a concept for a planned 2014 Jag supercar.

Powered by four 194 HP electric motors (one for each wheel) the C-X75 makes a combined total of 776HP with a whopping 1600Nm of torque, giving it a 0-100 time of 3.4s, a 1/4 mile time of 10.3s, and a top speed of 330km/hr.

But the really cool thing about this concept is it's range-extender system - which comprises of two 80,000 RPM gas turbines, each producing 70kW of charge current to the 19.6kWh Lithium Ion battery pack. The turbines are said to be able to run on a variety of different fuels including diesel, CNG, LPG and other biofuels. Electric range on battery power alone is quoted at 110km, with the gas turbines extending this to a whopping 900km - try to get that kind of range out any other supercar ;)
