Buying A Gun In Thailand - Possible?

Hi folks.

Is it possible for a foreigner\expat to buy\own a gun in Thailand? Oficially, I meant - with all necessary documents, police checks\records etc? I know here in Bkk is a whole street with many shops specialising in selling many kinds of arms, and Thais would easily get any - but is it possible for a foreigner, somehow (but still legally)?

Dont go there, i started a topic once and it got stopped, its a really dangerous ground to be on, if your married to a thai your wife can own one but you ilegaly can not even if its in a truck with just you in it your in deep trouble. trust me its really not worth it. :jap:

Mmm.....and what is the problem to own it? Once again, I am talking about the LEGAL ownership. Sure, I'll not go for illegal offers (whose could be easily obtained from the nearest...mmm....boys in the Sois just for 10K baht or something) - but sorry, I no need illegal stuffs like that. I know what it may cost me in the future.

Im talking about buying a brand new, fully legalized one in the fully legal shop, with all the necessary documents and permits. Any possibilities to have one for a foreigner? Im planning to use it at the army's shoting range @Nakhon Nayok (otherwise I got to rent it right there), which is visited often. And also as a "safety's guarantor" in da house (I live outside Bkk in a "developing" area with LOTS of Burma\Cambo low-life workers, thus the place is full of ka-moy's).

It is my understanding that if you (legally) own a business there is provision to keep one on the business premises only.

Don't know the ins and outs to that one. Best get a lawyer to put it in writing, then another lawyer to verify that lawyer's opinion then take them both down to the local cop shop and get it confirmed in writing from them. All in all, sounds like you might be opening yourself up to trouble.

Yes I do (but the business is not about body-guarding or security service or something like that, so noone is required to have any guns\armors). I just thinking to buy that for my own, personally. If there is a legal chance, I meant.

Also I am married to a Thai, if it helps (but I do not like the idea of buying that to my wife's name).Yes, it might be much easier to buy the thing, but these things are better not to be related with girls in any means. Especially Thai girls, you know what I meant. Better keep them totally separated - inclide the name in the permit.

Noted. Thanks.

Well, it is just an idea, a wish - for now. Of course I may cancel it anytime if it turn to be complicated. We are just discussing the possibility in general. :)

you have to prove that you need a gun in order to obtain a permission to own it

"To ensure and to protect my own safety, safety of my house, my wife and my children while and where officers are not in their duty" - is it OK to state?

We all know the "safety" level provided by those so-called "officers", "guards" and "securities". Mostly they sleeeeeeping at their positions on their duty time. Shhhhhhhhhh!!!! DND. :)

I'll get flamed but YES you can Legally own a gun in Thailand. There are are very few farangs that do because the required paperwork is next to impossible to obtain.

Great! Any more details??

Coincidentally, I asked the gun question to my T/G who is also a lawyer. And if you own a business you can get a gun license as protection of your shop premises, (This brings up a whole lot of scenarios)

The gun license would be for you and not exclusively for on the shop premises, meaning you can carry it in your car, glove box or compartment fully loaded. (Come on Rambo)

It took me a while to get the whole story from her?

She said you must go to gun shop, say in China town and they would have all the paperwork and the license for you in about a week..... Sounding even better.

Do I need to see the police at all I ask?

Oh yes, and they will check you out (records etc) and you will need a medical at the Government hospital and see if you are sane?........ Ok, I may not pass this one?

And?

You must do about 3 months training at the Police traing grounds in Nonthiburi. There is practical and Theory training and a test at the end of it which you must pass. OH. ...That sounds hard.

And then you may get your gun!. :D

Not sure of the costs etc. as this was as of how it was last year? She will get more accurate info in a day or two :)

The guys name is Mr Bout (victor). But I believe he is staying somewhere hard to reach currently.

It is VERY difficult for a Farang to get a gun licence - even if you have a business here you need to prove that it is necessary, simply saying "to protect the Company assets" whatever is nowhere near enough.

I am pretty sure you need to hold Permanent Residence status here too.

Also you cannot carry the gun unless you have a separate permission.

My Thai wife and I have both a gun license for business reason.

My wife can carry the gun concealed and loaded.

I only can have the gun unloaded with me when I go and come from the shooting range but are allowed to use it at our premises when needed.

Our licenses were organized via the police department instead of the city hall.

As we have good contacts with the police this was easier for us.

The police came to our house with a gun brochure to choose from.

After the license was granted we travelled to Bangkok to buy the gun.

You had to see the face of the check-in girl at the airport when after she asked if we had something to check-in and I said yes and showed her the gun case.

I got a gun licence very easy. But you have to be a permanent resident.

In short, no it is not possible , unless you are reassigned to work in Thailand where part of your job description requires you to carry a gun , in which case it gets little more complicated as work permit will also be required specifying weapon and what it’s for.

Got a mate who works for some special UN branch, he was moved to Thailand and was required to buy a gun .

Took him weeks in police station with all the paperwork and eventually all he could buy was a holster.

Maybe you should have a look at the news from the last days about Sukhumvit Soi 11/1 and 13.

There was this guy who had a police officer as friend - at least he thought so.

Until that police officer got upset and shot the guy.

And what do we learn from this? You might have a gentleman agreement with one police officer and maybe all will be fine. That is until the moment when it is not fine anymore. Maybe he won't shoot you right away but maybe his colleagues will show up and find an illegal gun with you. And then maybe your friend the policeman does not remember anymore what he told you earlier...

well after all this is thailand and part of the fun living here...the cop was not my friend it was a friend of a friend and it was a long time ago....cops are about many things...illegal (?)  guns only part of it...planted drugs the usual ..and a lot of other things u dont wanna know....to have a gun is useful but it requires proper training otherwise it is a danger not a help...and if it happens that u feel the need to use it and if that use ends lethal for the other ( robber, burgler etc ) ur real trouble starts than and I dont mean the legal side ( cause this can be sorted out somehow ) I mean your mind living with that reality of killing another person always catch up on you sooner or later...even this happens to security personal, soldiers etc... hope to  walk this life without beeing cause to another man's death ..a present to be cherished..

This thread is 8 years old,the op has not logged in since 2011.

He probably is not going to respond.

To me it seems that the rate of age old threads revived has raised.

No idea why.

Quoting members who have not been online since two years will also not wake them up I guess. Let's hope they are still among us.

Dr Frankenstein does his best.

If you've read the book "Look who's back"  you might realise that it is not easy for the recently revitalised to fit into today's society.
