Obama: We pray that by God's grace, trapped Chilean miners will emerge safely

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- U.S. President Barack Obama on early Tuesday evening said his thoughts and prayers are with the Chilean miners who are expected to be rescued over the next two days.

The 33 Chilean miners have been trapped about 700 meters (2,300 ft) deep at the San José copper-gold mine near Copiapo since August 5, when part of the mine collapsed. On Tuesday evening, an unseen rescue operation to rescue them will get underway.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the brave miners, their families, and the men and women who have been working so hard to rescue them," Obama said. "While that rescue is far from over and difficult work remains, we pray that by God’s grace, the miners will be able to emerge safely and return to their families soon."

Obama said the United States is also proud of the Americans who have been working with Chilean officials on the ground to help bring the trapped miners home.

The rescue operation to rescue the miners is expected to last up to two days.
