"I wish my wife was this dirty" - grime writing takes a wittier turn

Pranksters who scrawl messages on to the back of dirty vehicles used to confine their comments to 'wash me.'

But now there has been a surge in wittier slogans.

The trend of 'grime writing' was revealed when customers started Tweeting slogans they had seen on the backs of unkempt vehicles.

One of the favourites was seen in Abingdon, Oxon, where a girl dumped her partner via car graffiti, telling him: " We are so over", in large letters on the dirt of his back window. A week later he still hadn't washed his car.

A prison van outside Pentonville Jail had "I fought the law, but the law won!" written across the back doors while a sewage tanker in Cardiff was spotted bearing the words: "No stools left overnight" on its side".

People also vent their anger with messages on vehicles. One such missive said "Leave your van across my driveway again, and I'll torch it."

Others included "I wish my wife was this dirty!", Underneath which in different writing was scrawled: "she is when she's with me!".

"Cleaned by the NHS", "This isn't just dirt - this is M&S organic dirt" and "Dead body inside...shhhh!"

Matt Chapman from trends website Inhabitat.com confirmed the practice of writing on dirty vehicles was growing in popularity said: "A number of street artists have now taken to expressing themselves through the innovative practice of reverse graffiti.

Taking a cue from the "Wash Me" messages scrawled on the back of delivery trucks, they seek out soot covered surfaces and inscribe them with images, tags, and even advertising slogans."

Thanks for the post, eek. I've got to re-post it on another forum. Seeing that picture of the dogs also made me think of Nienke.

I drive my truck over dirty back roads all the time and a few times I've drawn pictures and notes on it. After seeing your post I'll try to be a little more creative.

Quite a few vehicles in the uk have "Hows my driving? Dial xxxxx", written on the back.

The fashion at the moment, particularly on agricultural vehicles, is to write in the dirt "Hows my driving? Dial 999"
